One of the most critical stages of the electronic design process is prototyping. With prototyping, a company can speed up the period between the time their product is conceived up to the time it is made available for sale. Efficient PCB prototyping also helps in meeting the critical requirements of the research and development stage of any product. Just imagine the level of prototyping a device like an iPhone goes through before it is introduced in the market. Without a series of prototype testing, iPhone wouldnt have the impeccable features it has today, like the Siri or the interactive maps.
Types Based on Source
If you want your prototyping to succeed, consider the type you would want to implement. Based on the source, there are two types of prototyping, the in house and the outsourced. In house prototyping is where you design your PCB with your own hardware, software and materials, while outsourced prototyping is when you hire a third party to design the circuit board based on your specifications.
Timeliness and Cost
In reality, both types of PCB prototyping has pros and cons, the most obvious of which are timeliness and cost. While an in-house prototyping can complete a prototype in a matter of hours, the cost, which comes with is higher than getting a third-party expert to design the prototype for you. However, an outsourced prototyping usually takes fifteen days to finish a prototype, but as mentioned, the cost is lower than prototyping the board yourself.
The reason is because these companies have contracted deals with their suppliers. In addition, the competition they have with probably a thousand other PCB prototyping companies is compelling them to lower their prices.
Recreation
If the original prototype fails to meet your design specifications, an in house prototyping capability allows you to recreate another one at no additional cost and wait time. On the other hand, an outsourced company will require additional payment for reconfiguring the prototype and may even take another fifteen days or more to receive.
If you think about it though, the extra wait time and cost will not be a waste if the outsourced company is well-experienced and has a good reputation. As a matter of fact, a DIY prototype may cost you more time and money, considering your designer has unrestricted use of the prototype machine. Unless you have an engineer who is well-adept with the process, then an in house prototyping may just be more advantageous than an outsourced type.
Training
Your concerns about PCB prototyping does not end with owning a machine. Youll have to learn and train your designers on how to handle it. On the other hand, a third-party designer from a well-known company would have been fully trained to handle prototyping requests.
Given these pros and cons of the types of PCB prototyping, it is indeed difficult to decide on the right one to utilize. However, a referral from the experienced user may expedite your decision and compare it while matching it with what your company needs. At the end day, what is more important is the long-term benefit of creating a working prototype than the short-term cost of building one.
