Among all types of flexible PCBs, the rigid flex PCB is the most complex. It combines circuit board elements that your PCB manufacturer must determine with clarity to come up with a PCB design, which fits your device, and not the other way around.
Best Practice #1: Outlining the Design
Before taking any big step, research on the best design practices of the China PCB manufacturer you are planning to hire. Currently, manufacturers use a design outline to determine the different layers of the flex PCB before producing a prototype. The outline must include each layers thickness, the material to use, and whether the layer is flexible or rigid.
A rigid flex PCB design outline must consist of the following layers: the polyimide base, the dielectric material, and the top and bottom layers, solders and solder pastes. A China manufacturer may use polyimide or polyester coverlays for your solders. For the layers and dielectric material, copper and FR-4 are used, respectively. An FR4 is a flame-resistant fiberglass laminate sheet impregnated with an epoxy resin.
After the China PCB manufacturer completes the PCB design outline, theyll specify the bends and folds to be applied on the rigid flex PCB. This is done on a 2D space where the designer also needs to document the elements that may cross over the boundaries of the flexible and rigid areas of the entire stack.
Best Practice #2: Applying Bookbinder Construction on the Bends
Another best practice you want the manufacturer to use is known in electrical engineering as the bookbinder construction. This method allows the designer to keep the flexible quality of the rigid flex PCB by adding a tiny length on each layer of the board. The general rule is to increase the length of a subsequent layer one-and-a-half times its thickness. This will result to the board moving only outwards from the bend radius while also eliminating the tension produced when bending the layers. In addition, this practice prevents the other inner layers from giving way.
Best Practice#3: Applying Curved Traces and Teardrop Pattern
When shopping for a PCB, find a manufacturer who knows they should not bend at the corners of the board. Keep in mind that copper traces should be positioned at a right angle to where the board should be bent. Otherwise, a conical radius bend must be applied to it.
In relation to bends, a trustworthy China PCB manufacturer knows that traces or corners must not be a hard right angle. Otherwise, theyll place a lot of stress on the copper traces. What the manufacturer should do is apply curved traces on the board when bending is required.
A reliable manufacturer also knows how to not create a weak spot on the board. If the trace width must be changed, your manufacturer should use a teardrop pattern. This allows him to change the trace width gradually while also preventing it from meeting the pad. When the meeting is prevented, you shouldnt worry about the board collecting acid during the chemical etching process, which is typically the cause of circuit issues. In addition, the teardrop pattern eliminates stress applied on the trace during a mechanical and thermal process.
