There is more to a flex PCB than a thin sheet of conductive material designed to fit into your electronic device to support and regulate circuitry. Because of the increasing demand for it, many manufacturers are now putting in some of the most unique and valuable features in their boards to keep up with the competition.
Heat Sink
One advanced feature of many flex boards today is the heat sink, which is a tiny temp-regulating device installation. As you may already know, high temperature can damage a component or the device itself. Some examples of device parts that are sensitive to high temperatures are your mobile phones processor and the LED installed in your emergency flashlight. With a heat sink, the high temperature is quickly dissipated, thereby preventing the source of the heat and the surrounding components from being damaged.
Surface Mounting
Instead of using through-hole mounting technology, many manufacturers are now using surface mounting on their flex boards to keep up with the demand for integrated circuits having more pin count than usual. The process involves attaching lead onto the surface of the flex PCB. This process has been proven to save more essential space than mounting holes through the board. Because it is smaller, a flex board with surface-mounted pins can also deliver a faster circuit speed than its counterpart with through-hole mountings. This is why a lot of high volume production companies prefer a flex PCB with surface mounted pins to be installed in their assembly equipment.
Conformal Coating
Conformal coating on a flex board involves spraying of dielectric material on its surface to protect it from internal and external stressors that can harm it. These elements include dust, moisture and fungi. The dielectric material also prevents the flex PCB from abrasion and corrosion.
The most common substances used to coat a flex board are epoxy. Parylene, urethane, acrylic and silicone. Among these though, the Parylene is the most flexible. It quickly conforms to the shape of any of the devices component. It does not only coat the exposed surface of even the smallest component, but also covers the sharp, pointed edges and crevices of the different parts.
Protective Packaging
Most manufacturers also use electrostatic protective packaging on their flex board to ensure that no static electricity will be produced while it is being transported. Unlike what most people think, electronic devices and their components still discharge electricity even if they are not being used. The discharge, no matter how small, may still cause damage to the device or some of its components. Therefore, electrostatic-resistant materials are also used to package the devices or the flex PCB itself.
A flex board, depending on the manufacturer, may be customized with advanced features to meet your circuitry needs. In most cases, these advanced features are included to protect not only the flex PCB, but also the device and its other components. If you are looking for a flex board manufacturer, always prioritize their safety and protective features to get your moneys worth.
