From the humble replacement to the typical wire harness, the flexible circuit board has evolved into an important part of any electrical device. The use of this dielectric film is continuously proliferating. Industries relying heavily on electronics are using it on simple and complex applications to ensure their safe and efficient operations.
For the past decades, manufacturers have been improving the board to meet the varying needs of telecommunications automotive, industrial and commercial companies. This resulted to the flexible circuit board having five classifications based on design.
Single Layer Board
If your company requires a specific circuit pattern, but would like the flexible circuit board to be simple, you may request your manufacturer to create a single layer board. The board is usually made of a polyimide film, which is then covered with a thin layer of copper. The circuits are then etched using chemicals on the laminated board. Finally, another layer of polyimide is placed on top of the circuit pattern to regulate insulation and protect the circuit pattern from environmental elements.
Dual Access Board
The dual access board also uses a single layer of polyimide and copper. The difference is that technologically advanced lasers are used to open the polyimide to allow access to the copper film. This results to the conductive material being accessible on either sides of the circuit pattern.
Two-Sided Board
On the other hand, a two-sided flexible circuit board utilizes two layers of a conductive material. Each layer lies on either side of the base layer, which is the polyimide film. Depending on your design requirements, a pattern is then etched on each side of the substrate film. To allow electrical connection between the two layers, copper-plated through-holes are then installed.
Multi-Layered Board
The most complex type of board is the multi-layer flex. It combines the two or more single-sided or double-sided boards to allow several interconnections. With this type, you have the option to not apply continuous lamination during the design process. However, applications that require more flexibility will need lamination done. This is true for applications with high component densities and need additional shielding. If you want to eliminate crosstalks, impedance and crossovers, the multi-layered flexible circuit board is highly recommended.
Rigid Flexible Board
The rigid flexible circuit board is the most widely used in the aerospace industry and the military. It consists more than two inner circuit layers that are attached with bonding films or epoxy. In general, a rigid flex board is in itself an internal and external incorporation of the two types of board, but still designed based on your requirements.
Since this is a combination of rigid and flexible boards, it improves circuit quality control and component density where needed. Furthermore, it allows the use of usually hard-to-reach areas and corners to maximize space.
