Article Category: Family Concerns
Author Name: Kay Campbell
Jamie was 18 years old when his adoptive parents decided to reveal to him the truth about his being an adopted child – this is an all too familiar scenario for many adopted children. Many parents who adopt children go through the process of revealing the truth to their adopted child as a milestone into adulthood. The result is often mixed. Some deal with it in a positive way and are able to accept the reality enough to move on with their lives. Others find themselves on a path to finding their birth mother and birth families in order to find closure in their lives. Jamie is one of those people.
After dealing with the impact of the curve ball his adoptive parents sent his way, he decided to find his birth mother. Somehow there was a need to know who his real mother or parents were. After much research Jamie chose to approach a DNA testing lab and go through a Mitochondrial DNA testing process.
This particular genealogical DNA testing process involves zeroing in on that particular human cell called the Mitochondrion. With only 16,569 base pairs to check it provides a direct genetic link from birth mother to child. The Mitochondrion is a cell that is shared directly by the mother to the child. It is probably the most effective DNA testing technique sure to point at parentage. Why? It narrows the search from 3.2 billion base pairs of the human genome to 16, 569 maternal base pairs.
Jamie visited a DNA testing center and asked for a Mitochondrial DNA test. First, a blood sample was extracted from him. He was asked to wait for a couple of weeks to give time for the lab to analyze the sample. The laboratory process is three pronged. First, it goes through a coding process though examination of the 00577-16023 genetic regions. Second, the Hyper Variable Regions HVR1 16024 – 16569 are processed for base pairs. Third, the HVR2 00001-00576 is identified. After going through these three stages of gene identification the result is then matched to the Mitochondrion of a Haplogroup H2a2a of European origin. The result is a full sequence of HVR1 and HVR2. Once the test result is released it is a matter of matching the gene sequence to possible birth mother match.
The DNA testing center that Jamie worked with to gather his gene sequence was able to follow through with matching his gene to his mother. They were able to do this by entering Jamie's DNA test result into a global DNA mainframe where DNA data of millions of people across the US and the globe is stored. Once Jamie's DNA data entered the system all it required was to ask for a genetic match, particularly a maternal gene match. Although the process took another couple of days, ultimately the system was able to find an exact Mitochondrion match to Jamie's DNA sequence. After that all it required was getting the personal information of the DNA sequence that matched Jamie's before they were able to identify Jamie's birth mother.
Needless to say, Jamie was able to find his birth mother and find closure to a part of his life that previously was a big question mark.
