Author Name: Kay Campbell
Ever since DNA testing was introduced into the mainstream, it has been useful for many reasons, and the most prominent of which is its ability to reunite adopted children to their families. Through genealogical DNA tests, a person's genome is extracted and examined based on hundreds of thousands of locations. The result leads to information on the family history of the person -- their personal ancestry.
That said, genealogical DNA tests are not supposed to be used to determine a health condition, a health disorder, or used for medical purposes. It will allow a person to find their birth mother but not point at a particular disease. There are other forms of DNA testing for that particular purpose. With genealogical DNA testing it will only provide information on family lineage information.
The procedure is simple . Just provide a DNA sample to be tested. DNA samples could be provided as a buccal swab, spit cups, mouthwash, or even chewing gum. After collecting the DNA sample send it to a DNA test clinic for processing or use a home test that can be purchased from independent DNA test suppliers. Most DNA tests labs will take less than a month to release DNA test results. And all offer clients to store their DNA test results for future reference.
For children who are adopted, the search for birth parents and families through DNA testing is possible through three types of tests. They are ancestry autosomal DNA test, Y-Chromosome DNA test, or mitochondrial DNA test. Autosomal DNA tests checks for ancestry. Mitochondrial DNA tests checks for genealogy through the maternal line. While Y-Chromosome DNA tests is exclusive for men as it traces genealogy through the paternal line.
Details of Autosomal DNA Tests
Using 22 pairs of chromosome that are directly inherited from both parents, Autosomal testing traces lineage back to immediate grandparents until great grandparents down the line of ancestry. The test reads chromosomes that are not related to gender at all which makes autosomal DNA tests possible for both men and women. The test is centered on tracing the path of the X-Chromosome which is present in men and women and inherited from their mothers. After the X-Chromosome trace provided by a single DNA test and placing it side by side millions of DNA test results to find a match, there's the process of autosomal DNA testing.
An adopted child who takes an autosomal DNA tests should be able to find their birth parents or birth mother provided their parents DNA is in the global DNA library. This should not be a problem if the adopted child went through regular adoption process which keeps DNA test results of birth parents. The matching process is easy. If two individuals have the same threshold DNA then they are considered a match. The more DNA is shared between two people, then it is likely they are related as immediate family. That said parents will be almost an identical match in terms of DNA with their children. While DNA matching with distant relatives will be less and less down the line.
