Just about everyone is on Facebook these days...as they should be. But, if you're a business, it's virtually an absolute must that you have a business page. And, as much as I love Facebook, I'm not a fan of their recent update.
What is it? Why is it important?
Listen Up!
A couple weeks ago, Facebook announced that it was changing the way a person's newsfeed appears...AGAIN. In my opinion, this time it went a little too far.
Now, this post is not intended to be a rant (although it might appear that way). Instead, I aim to inform you and express how important it is to stay on top of updates, changes and trends. This applies to anything you focus on. It could be your industry or it could be where you are spending money and time, like Facebook.
If you're not aware, let me give you a tiny explanation of how things "worked" and why you saw what appeared when you opened up your personal Facebook account. Truth be told, what you see and in what order runs on an algorithm, and it still is. The goal of the algorithm is to provide you with things you want to see first. With regards to a business, there was two, very important, key things that helped a business page be visible to you and I.
If you 'Liked' a page, the posts would appear in your newsfeed.
If you marked an individual's page or a business page as "See First", those posts would be a priority on your newsfeed over all others.
That has all changed.
This new "update" to your newsfeed, gives favor to your family and friends and actually works against brand and business pages. This makes it even harder for your business to be visible. Further, it "means when you visit Facebook on the web or on mobile, most of the stories and videos you see will be there because your Facebook friends have shared them, not because a company whose page you once "Liked" posted a story or update."
What does this mean?
Well, you can completely scrap reasons #1 and #2 provided above. It apparently no longer matters if someone 'Likes' your page.
How can you gain visibility? There are a few ways.
1. Provide high-quality content that creates a lot of engagement.
If that criteria is met, Facebook classifies your post as "sharable" and your post will show up in the newsfeed of your followers. If you're not absolutely confident in your ability to do so, I would recommend hiring a company, like Rescue Me, or freelancer that has experience with that.
2. Spend money on ads.
This option isn't the worst in the world for something that you really, really, really want to be visible. For example, you have a big event or a blog post or special. If you do decide to do this, I highly recommend finding someone who is an expert in setting them up.
3. Share your Facebook posts
Share your posts in other places, like your other social media accounts or occasionally in your newsletter.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Just like Google changed it's algorithm to require a mobile website to be ranked in search engine results, Facebook's announcement requires you bring your Facebook "A" game. Also, I hope this serves as a reminder to hire an expert or stay on the up-and-up or you will be losing money...and time.
Of course, if you have any questions about this, leave me a comment. I'm happy to help.
