Nothing something bad like a large crack in your house or foundation. Aside from the eminent danger that these fissures pose, the cost of professional repair needed to address this problem will bleed you dry for months. Fortunately, the invention of foundation crack repair kits has helped many people save hard earned money.
Starting the DIY Crack Repair
The process of foundation crack repair is easy as long as you have the patience and guts to test products in the market. Here are the basic steps to follow for your do-it-yourself fixing:
1. Assess the type of crack.
There are several types of foundation cracks and each one may need a specific type of kit. Below is a brief overview:
• A vertical or an almost upright crack
• Slab foundation cracks
• Corner foundation cracks
• A parallel gap between bricks or in the middle of a concrete
• Wide fissures found on the angle of a door
2. Inspect the crack for humidity or seeping water.
Any adhesive placed on a damp crack will lose its potencyso the spot needs to be dried. Use a fan or a blow dryer for about 5-10 minutes then wait for at least 15 minutes for it to dry up completely. If after the wait the location is still wet, then be patient and let it dry up naturally.
3. Clean the area thoroughly.
Scour the whole crack and the surrounding area with a steel brush or steel pad. Be sure to remove remaining materials of concrete, paint, fillers, adhesives, or wallpaper. Vacuuming the spot is also advisable to get rid of dust, molds, mildew or rubble.
4. Create ample space for the kit devices and adhesive.
Drive in three inch (10d) nails of the smallest size halfway into the fracture with 12 inches apart each. These will allow the injection ports to level with the gap.
5. Prepare the Adhesive.
Assuming that the type of fissure and appropriate adhesive has been determined, prepare the concoction according to the kit instructions. Make sure to follow the mixing proportions to achieve the correct viscosity. Use separate mixing sticks for each chemical so they retain their effectiveness.
6. Fasten the Injection Ports.
Get a piece of entrance and apply sealant at the bottom without plugging up its hole. Inset the port on to a nail and push it firmly into place. Once it sticks, complete the rest of the procedure.
7. Apply sealer to the whole gap.
Make a bigger batch of sealer and put it on the crack using a putty knife or anything similar. The material should cover the entire area specifically the all around of the ports leaving only the upper part exposed. Flatten the edges of the sealer with a brush soaked in mineral spirits. Set for 6-10 hours.
8. Inject the adhesive into the crack.
If the crack is sealed and treated inject the adhesive into the spot and be sure to cover everything.
9. Plug up the injection port. Seal the port and insert the case. Repeat until finished.
10. Let it set for 5 days and saw off the ports. If everything was done properly, the foundation crack repair should be successful.
Performing a foundation crack repair is not for the fearful. Doing it unprofessionally is risk enough. However, convenience and savings are definitely great rewards for the job well done.
