Actually, teflon was not supposed to be discovered.
It was discovered all because of an accident. The accident happened in DuPont, Jackson, New Jersey, when Dr. Plunkett was researching for an alternative to refrigerants. He was looking for something that is non-toxic. That was in the year 1938 when Dr. Plunkett along with his assistant thought they already found the perfect alternative for refrigerants, which is tetraflourethylene. The doctor stored the said chemical gas in small cylinders making almost 100 pounds of them.
When they came back last April 6, 1938, they tried to open one of the cylinders containing the chemical gas they stored. The chemical gas by this time had already frozen that is why after opening it, there is nothing there. It puzzled both of them because the weight of the cylinder is still the same compared to when the TFE chemical gas was there before.
Hence, they tried to cut the cylinder open only to find out that the chemical gas they stored inside had turned to a waxy white powder resin. The TFE gas turned into polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) most commonly known today as teflon.
Since this substance was new for Dr. Plunkett, he ran various tests to find out the properties and possible uses of PTFE. Through the test results, he found out that the substance was one of the most slippery substances to be discovered during that era.
True enough, teflon holds the Guinness Book of World Records at present as third of the most slippery substances to ever exist. It was a substance with the largest molecules which is primarily made of fluorine and carbon. He also found out that it was chemically stable, non-corrosive and could withstand extremely high temperature.
During that time, this discovery had already been a phenomenal one that the substance was transferred to the Central Research Department of DuPont and undergone research and tests from chemists which specialize in polymer related substances. As for Dr. Plunkett, he was promoted and was assigned to another department. When he retired in the year 1975, he was included in the Hall of Fame and later on was added in the National Inventors' Hall of Fame in 1985.
In a matter of three years, teflon was trademarked and in another four years, it was already available in the market. At first it was used for industrial parts and military weapons since it was costly to produce TFE. As decades passed, particularly in the 1960s, it was already used in different products. For one, it was used in earlier eras as coating for electrical wire insulations and stain repellant for fabrics like carpets.
During this year as well, they discovered one of the most popular uses of Teflon to coat non-stick pans and other kitchen tools. As of today, there is already a wider variety of use for this chemical coating. It is now used to coat windshield wipers, furniture, hair products, glasses, automotive parts, igniters and other things which require heavy use or use under extremely warm temperatures.
