Author Name: Megan Dixon at Rescue Me
This is a post I've been meaning to do for a while. Excuse the blunt message this week, but I want to cut right through the BS. I often have people come to me asking for help with social media or asking why they aren't seeing success with their social media efforts. Truth be told, the answer isn't the same for everyone. Each business and account has it's own unique concoction to finding success. However, I can tell you, that after having a very quick look, more often than not I see these social media mistakes over and over again...literally on a daily basis. These mistakes can easily be fixed and without much effort. In turn, this both makes me sad and frustrated at the same time.
Why do I feel this way?
It's simple. I feel sad for those who haven't been educated and informed of these mistakes. You don't know what you don't know. That is no one's fault. On the flipside, we do have a thing called the internet. That's what brought you to this post. So, either the information was provided and not followed or there was no effort to find a solution to something that isn't working. As a social media expert, I decided that I'd throw this post out there and hope it sticks.
If you're losing social media followers, here are 5 things you can do to quickly stop it...or at least slow it down.
1 - Don't Ignore Them
This is simple. If someone follows you, thank them. If someone mentions or retweets you, thank them. If someone comments on your post, thank them. For goodness sake, THANK THEM!
2 - Don't Self-Promote Too Much
Oh dear...this one...I could go on all day with examples. When I visit an account and look at the tweets or posts in the last 2 weeks -- ONLY 20% of the tweets or posts should be self-promotion. For me, this is almost an instant unfollow or removal of a like. And, I certainly won't share the incessant "sales" posts. I'm not saying you can't share your blog post, event or special. But, I don't want to see it every day. Your social media accounts are not sales pages.
3 - Don't Disappear
We are all guilty of it and no one is perfect. However, people are impatient and quickly will move on to the next thing. This can easily happen when you look at your to-dos and prioritize. Many times, we put off our own things for our clients. However, consistency is key to making your efforts worthwhile. If you disappear for a month, it will be a lot harder to get folks noticing you again. The saying goes, "It's easier to keep a customer than to find a new one." This is also true of your followers.
4 - Don't Like Yourself
Stop liking your own tweets and posts! That feature isn't there for you. It's there for your followers. I've run into people that do that to help "increase their likes." The reality is, that won't help. It just makes you look like you don't know what you're doing.
5 - Don't Be A Robot
Social media is for human interaction. So, make sure you act human. I mentioned adding posts other than self-promotion and that is a perfect place to bring out your personality. Ask questions, post personal pictures, etc. And....of course...reply to everyone and thank them (point #1).
It's frustrating and sad for me because when I talk to people about these areas. I usually get responses like "oh, yes, I know", "I didn't realize that" or "I know, but I just need to have a presence." If you'd ask my opinion, the last is the worst of them all. It's called social media folks. That means not just posting to post and not just having an account to exist. If you know you shouldn't be doing these things....why are you?
Comment and let me know. It helps me to develop new strategies for helping, blog post ideas and get others perspectives. If you don't know this stuff, don't beat yourself up. Today is a new day...that's why I wrote this post. :-)
