The Chinese have a philosophy called Wu Xing . It roughly means the Five Motions or Five Transformation . However it is referred to in the English speaking world as the Five Elements . Why the Five Elements ? Wu Xing is about the five forms of qi or energy along with the interplay between them . The five types of qi are metal , wood , water , fire and earth . The ancient Chinese people sense that energy and matter is interchangeable and solids are nothing more than energy at rest whereas invisible vapor is loosely packed qi akin to ice and water vapor .

All these five qi in everyday life were regarded as the source of all things in the universe and natural phenomena . They have got their own characters and they can produce or control one other .

As an example water produces wood while wood produces fire . Fire then simply produce earth which produces metal . Metal produces water and the producing action starts again .

Conversely earth control water while water controls fire . Fire then control metal which control wood . Wood controls earth and the controlling cycles starts again .

The attributes of wood is benevolence . It pronounces the fate , lowliness or nobleness , which represents extractive , lush , remarkable , blooming , thriving and so on .

The properties of fire is propriety . It pronounces the feature , strength or softness , which represents energy , influence , bravery and intense .

The features of metal is righteousness . It pronounces the life span , long life or abortion , foreseeing any penalties , dangers , difficulties and dead end .

The features of water is wisdom . It pronounces the ability , sage or fool , representing competence , brightness , agile mind and accuracy .

And finally the characteristics of earth earth is fidelity or integrity . It pronounces the rank , rich or poor , representing the birth and progress of everything .

In practice the Five Elements is also correlated with things such as colors , seasons , directions , organs , taste , planets etc .

For instance metal is white . Wood is green . Water is blue . Fire is red while earth is yellow . With regards to seasons , metal is autumn . Wood is spring . Water is winter . Fire is summer and earth is the end of seasons .

In terms of direction metal is west . Wood is east . Water is north , Fire is south while earth represents the center . In regards to the organs , metal is th lung . Wood is the liver . Water the kidneys . Fire the heart and earth is the spleen .

In terms of flavor metal is pungent . Wood is sour . Water is salty . Fire is bitter and Earth is sweet . And finally Venus is the metal planet. Jupiter the wood planet. Mercury the water planet. Mars the fire planet and Saturn the earth planet.
