There are clotheslines that are for outdoor use, and there are ones that you can only use indoors. The outdoor types, which you will be learning about later, include fixed head rotary, folding frame, folding rotary, and retractable. Read on to find out more about each type and choose a clothesline that is ideal for you.
Fixed Head Rotary
A fixed head rotary clothesline is traditionally used in many homes. This clothesline is an old style galvanized type that has four arms permanently extended with wires suspended between them.
Advantages
Sturdy this model normally does not have plastic parts, which makes it robust and sturdy.
Winder it helps to raise the line so that the clothes can clear the ground and to lower it to remove or add clothes.
Can hold large amounts of clothing this is perhaps the biggest advantage of this clothesline. It can handle huge amounts of laundry at the same time.
Lasts longer because the wire is made from galvanized steel, it lasts longer than the cord used in retractable or folding clotheslines.
Better spacing of clothes the lines are much further away from each other, which allow better airflow between clothes.
Disadvantages
Needs more space you need a lot of yard space to install this clothesline.
Can rotate around a lot strong winds can cause this so you need to be careful with expensive clothing items.
Folding Rotary
This is an updated version of the fixed head rotary clothesline, but with added features.
Advantages
Can be folded away you can remove and fold it away to save space.
Winder helps reach the line and raises it up to keep clothes away from the ground.
Sheet separators some folding rotaries have these features to separate your sheets so air can circulate between them.
Coat hanger hooks some also come with these to dry clothing more appropriately and minimize creasing.
Disadvantages
Less durable this type of clothesline uses flexible PVC cord lines that are less durable than galvanized steel wire lines.
Lines are closer together since the lines are closer together, air cannot circulate between the clothes as much, thus they tend to take a longer time to dry.
Folding Frame
This type is the most modern-looking and popular among all clotheslines. It has a rectangular frame that folds down.
Advantages
Saves space can be folded down when not in use.
Many variations this clothesline comes in different sizes.
Sheet separators some models have this feature to help with drying times.
Disadvantages
Does not have enough line space this type is not suitable for huge amounts of clothes.
Less durable also uses PVC cord lines.
Retractable
This comes as a cabinet with about 4 to 6 cord lines inside that are retractable and attached to a hook on the other end.
Advantages
Out of sight you can hide it when not in use.
Good line space quality models have a line space of 30-50 meters.
Great for small areas can fit even in narrow passageways.
Disadvantage
Can droop lower quality models are likely to drag sheets on the ground.
Depending on your drying needs and available space, choose among these types for the clothesline that is suitable for you.
