Even if you lose control just once a month and are sober as a judge the rest of the time, you're still considered a binge drinker. And regrettably, you belong to an evolving pattern.

Alcohol is the most readily acceptable and accessible drug in the world today and it works wonders on our emotional state, anxiety levels and self-esteem. But there's a sinister side too, warns clinical psychologist and binge drinking counselor Ian Cohen.
"In my practice I see a lot of people saying, 'My other half says if I don't stop drinking, they'll leave me'," he says. "Frequently people minimize the concern and say, 'It's not so harmful, everybody else drinks'. Even if it's sporadic, binge drinking has a big impact.

"You might believe you're simply letting off steam", but reports reveal our ability to make good choices diminishes with each drink, and females are at a greater danger of engaging in unsafe sexual behavior and as much as 5 times more likely to contract a sexually

Recognize binge triggers.
Is it your family members? Those salty chips? Or the buzz of that trendy bar? A new Spanish study shows even raucous music can urge us to drink more. The secret, says Cohen, is to identify drinking triggers and avoid them; and if you can not,, divert yourself by playing snooker, dancing or chatting. Not sure of your triggers? Keep an alcohol consumption journal, noting when, where, what and with whom you last consumed alcohol, and patterns will quickly emerge. If you have the willpower you can use this data to formulate a plan of how to stop binge drinking the next time you are in the same environment.
Slow down speedy.
This is the most effective way to manage your drinking, says Spada. "If you are drinking fast you may well be noticing the effects of the 2nd drink while you are having your fourth or third. You may become convinced it takes three or four drinks to get the effect you like when in reality it does not." Quick drinking also builds up your resistance to alcoholic drinks, which intensifies the issue.
How to stop binge drinking.
As opposed to visiting the inn with mates, meet for a coffee or at the beach instead. And remember, the better your lifestyle and the less stressed out you are, the less likely you are to over-indulge (analysis reveals extremely stressed out employees, and cigarette smokers, drink much more than other people). "It may mean introducing exercise and managing stress and anxiety appropriately," adds Cohen.
Get leverage
Why did you drink so much last time? Was it because of issues at the office or in your marriage? Were you anxious or just irritated? You won't deal with the alcohol consumption until you handle the underlying cause, says Cohen. "You may have depression or anxiousness, so what's required is a very good evaluation of your issues and after that help to establish a tactic to cease the binge drinking." Speak to good friends, family members, your Family Doctor or a psychologist.
Go without.
If you've attempted to control your alcohol consumption before and failed, it may be simpler to ban booze entirely. "Data shows that controlled alcohol consumption is harder than abstaining." That's because it typically takes just one alcoholic beverage to send your drinking objectives AWOL. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a health care condition or a job that doesn't combine well with alcoholic drinks, you ought to also consider abstaining.
Craig Beck the author of Alcohol Lied to Me takes a much stronger stance on binge drinking. He says "If you are searching online for how to stop binge drinking then you need to become awake to the reality that alcohol is just attractively packaged poison, there is no advantage in drinking poison in moderation.
