Long gone is the time when every household had an outdoor clothesline for clothes to simply hang dry. Even people with dryers before only use theirs during winter or on rainy days. Nowadays, it is rare to spot a house with a line dryer, which is sad considering the current situation of the Earths temperature and weather. In fact, electric clothes dryers consume one of the biggest portions of residential energy. According to estimates, using a machine dryer can use up to six to ten percent of energy in a household. Fortunately, a growing number of homeowners nowadays are willing to go old-school and use clotheslines again.
In the USA, a good example of outdoor clothesline advocacy is the Project Laundry List. It is a non-profit organization, which endorses air-drying to save energy, and protect the environment along the process. They aim to educate people regarding the benefits of air-drying. What better way to do this than start a national effort? In 1998, on April 19th, the National Hanging Out Day was started. It puts up a show of the possibility of saving energy and money by using a clothesline. It educates not only people at home, but international organizations as well, about energy consumption within communities. Hopefully, it will influence other countries to exert the same efforts. Based on the organizations studies and findings, here are some ways on how can clotheslines help humanity save energy.
An enormous percentage of households today use electronic or machine dryers for the purpose of convenience and only 20% use an outdoor clothesline. In a year, 80% of homes can dry up to 400 loads of clothes. Considering the average power cost and consumption to dry all these loads, it can reach up to $120, or more, cost of electricity to run a machine clothes dryer. Gas clothes dryers do not fall behind. Although they use less energy, they are still costly. Either way, machine or gas dryer, users will have to spend more. How about the source of energy used for electric dryers?
There are natural gas and nuclear energy, but power is mostly generated from coal, a form of fossil fuel. By using electronic dryers instead of an outdoor clothesline, people consume more electricity, equating to almost 900 pounds of coal a year. When coal is burned to produce electricity, it is transformed into carbon dioxide that all living things breathe. It is harmful to humans health, and to the environment, too.
Carbon emissions created by producing electricity mixes with other greenhouse gases in the air develops a blanket in the Earth. This blanket absorbs heat from the sun and warms the planet. High amounts of carbon in the environment can make global temperature to rise. Its effects include global warming, climate change, and rise in ocean water levels. If every household uses an outdoor clothesline, carbon emissions will be reduced, thus, helping the environment.
Now its up to the readers to make a decision whether to use electric clothes dryers or prefer an environment-friendly outdoor clothesline. It is always easy to put up one at home, but there are considerably priced ready-made clotheslines available in home centers or hardware stores today. Buyers can choose from drying racks, and retractable, rotary, or permanent pole clotheslines.
