First impressions last. This is the rule any applicant should remember during a job interview. An applicant's job interview is a make or break. Either he gets the job, or he doesn't. If you want to be shortlisted for the position, or better yet, get hired on the spot, follow these rules:
• A firm handshake. Shaking hands with the employer is the first opportunity of an applicant to make a great impression. It is best to give your employer a firm handshake. Giving an employer a limp hand gives out the impression that the applicant isn't really into the job position. Shake hands and make eye contact with the employer.
• Be early. It is better for the applicant to arrive at least 30 minutes before the interview. Do not arrive late during an interview. That is a no-no. You will never be considered for the position if you arrive late. No matter how good an applicant you are, being late especially during an important interview will never get you anywhere.
• Dress the part. What you wear during an interview will sometimes determine if you will be shortlisted for the position. Always wear something comfortable and formal. It would be helpful to bring Thank You cards as well. Give it to the interviewer right after the interview. Doing that will give out a positive impression. You might get a call right away, or better yet, be scheduled for another interview.
• Answer questions right away. Hesitating will never give out a good impression. When asked a question, the applicant should respond immediately. It is better for the applicant to be prepared prior to the job interview. He may want to list out interview questions and memorize the answers. Quickly responding to the employer with clever answers will greatly contribute to the applicant being hired.
• Never give out negative comments about your previous employers. During a job interview, an employer may ask the applicant to talk about his previous work experiences. All conversation during the interview should be positive. Never, ever talk about the time you were mistreated by your previous employer. That will not give a positive as well as a good impression. In fact, you may not be considered for the position. Talk only about your accomplishments with your previous employer and how you were able to contribute to the company.
• Do your research. This should be the first thing the applicant should do before applying for a job. Know the company you are applying for. Read helpful news that you might use during the interview. Read about how the company was formed, what their businesses are, and how they contribute to the market. Knowing these things will give you an edge over the other applicants of the job.
An applicant should bring an extra resume to an interview just in case the interviewer lost his copy. If possible, he may bring a job-skills portfolio as well to highlight his other accomplishments. Following the tips above together with a good preparation will greatly help an applicant during the job interview.
