Humans are naturally creative and resourceful. When there is a need, innovative things are created or done to solve the dilemma. One best example is selfie stick invention.
History shows that in 1925, the first crude model of a homemade selfie stick was done by an unknown man who wanted to capture a photo of himself and his wife. They were all alone at that time. So, he put the camera away from them and used a long pole to control the shutter button.
But, do you know that there were two men who actually invented the selfie stick? They invented their own version of the original selfie stick two decades apart after experiencing inconvenience during their European vacation.
The first man was Hiroshi Ueda who created his selfie stick in the 1980s. He called it telescopic extender. He was working as an engineer for Minolta that time, and loved to take photographs with his camera. He enjoyed travelling abroad with his wife and took photos of their adventures. However, they did not trust strangers to get their pictures because of one incident when a child ran away with his camera while they were visiting Paris famous Louvre Museum.
This made him think of an innovative solution. He designed an extender stick using tripod screw and mirror in front of the camera so photographers can set the angle properly. Minolta approved the manufacture of his invention, and the first version of the original selfie stick got its patent in 1983. However, sales were so low because of the poor quality of pictures taken. Patent ended in 2003. This original selfie stick by Hiroshi was included in the list of 101 Un-Useless Japanese Inventions.
The second man who invented the selfie stick was Wayne Fromm of Toronto, Canada. He invented Quik Pod in the early part of 2000. He was not aware of Uedas invention. It was also during their familys European holiday that he came up with his creative invention. They were always waiting for English-speaking strangers who were kind enough to stop and get their photos. Fed up of always doing this practice, he thought of making a device to suspend the camera on air and shoot pictures. When they returned to Canada, he bought different umbrellas and tore them apart. It gave way to Quick Pod with quick-release head. This version of the original selfie stick was a commercial success.
These 2 versions of original selfie stick begun a selfie revolution all over the world. The ingenuity of these two men has inspired people to capture special solo moments and group events.
At present, manufacturers develop different types of selfie sticks. Different accessories are also made to supplement the functionality of selfie sticks. Examples are LED flash bulbs, wide-angle lens, Bluetooth and portable charger. Another reason that makes selfie sticks popular is their compatibility with smartphones, which makes selfie time more convenient.
In 2014, Time Magazine heralded the selfie stick as one of mans best inventions. This further enhances the functionality and popularity of selfie sticks. Now, there is no doubt that humans are excellent innovators, especially with the continuous evolution of original selfie sticks.
