Do you remember when the cute sales person kept talking to you, even after you�ve already established that you weren�t going to buy anything, and was just canvassing? He was charming and appeared to sincerely care for your checklist. He even made some suggestions, marketing brands other than what he could sell, but after getting from him as much advice as you can, you left the store and bought a similar product somewhere else, only because the prices, when compared, were too different. Yet you recommended the first store you tried to your friends, who, though they may not buy there, now knows the place.

It seemed that the store did not make a sale. It would seem so, right? There had been no exchange of product for cash, and no commission for the sales person you talked with, but he didn�t end the day with nothing. He probably was evaluated glowingly by his boss. Why? The sales person had indirectly made you remember the name of the store by making you remember how nicely you were treated there.

This is a subtle form of marketing, where you were made to have some positive associations with the brand. Marketing is an umbrella term describing the art of influencing buyers into agreeing to an exchange with the sellers, either for products or services. This can be done by making the brand more visible, attainable and interesting. If applied properly, the sale will not leave a bad taste in the mouth for both the buyer and the seller. Nobody will finish0the negotiation with the feeling of being swindled, or taken on cheap. In the simplest of explanations, the desired result of marketing is making your product or services relevant to the needs and wants of your consumers.

Specific methods on how to accomplish this depends on your target demographic, spread by age, gender, lifestyle, or income. You have to make the product appealing by adapting it to the changing moods of the public, and with professional packaging. Even if you are selling immortality in an aerosol, nobody will buy it if it looks too funny or weird. Not exactly nobody, but probably not enough to get to critical mass, when there is enough interest from the public that they begin pushing the brand into the spotlight on their own. Before this, you have to apply your chosen marketing strategy, and wait for the brand to take a life of its own.
Sounds hard, right? Well, there are groups that will give you in depth information and advice on how to do marketing effectively. Some of these groups cost a lot, and some are too cheap you wonder if any worth is in them. As with all rookies, any advice often helps, you just have to cherry pick the best ones. Marketing is a tough business, but then again, nothing that will give you guaranteed results is ever easy. If you did not sweat for it, it may not be good enough, and if you lack the interest, then you might as well not do it.
