In March of every year, there is such a thing as "Fix A Leak Week". 10 % of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons or more per day. It's important to check for leaks.
Yes I agree that all leaks are not dangerous. But you don't know until you check. For example, toilet flappers leak and faucets leak (usually no mold problems), and valves leak (this usually causes mold) and pipes have cracks that leak (major mold problems). Yet almost all leaks are corrected easily. For example, concerning toilet leaks, to find out if you have a toilet leak, simply put a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. You have a leak if the colored water shows up in the bowl within 15 minutes without flushing.
Now Some Serious Facts About Water Leaks
On average (so if you don't have leaks, then someone is leaking way more than you are) each house leaks more than 10,000 gallons of water each year. Wow!
On a national scale this is wasted water of more than 1 Trillion gallons each year. Wow again!
Fixing just the easy leaks will save each homeowner about 10 % on their water bills.
Checking For Leaks
If you can find your water meter (ask your neighbor to help you if you need to), you should check your meter and wait for 2 hours when all faucets are off and no water is being used (so you think). In 2 hours if the meter does not read exactly the same, you have leaks. In the winter time, a family of four has serious leaks if the winter water usage is more than 12,000 gallons in a month.
Leaks To Think About
A leaky faucet dripping at one drip per second is about 3,000 gallons per year, or the equivalent of 180 showers that are being wasted. And usually it's a simple matter to replace gaskets and washers, and the cost is not even that much to replace an entire faucet.
And for a shower, the rate of 10 drips within a minute uses more than 500 gallons each year, or the equivalent of running your dishwasher for 60 loads (with no dishes to wash). It's a total waste. Shower heads can usually be fixed with the white pipe tape and a common wrench, and new shower heads don't cost much.
Then the most often cause of toilets leaking (running) is an old toilet flapper. These are very inexpensive rubber parts that decay and the minerals in the water build up on them. It's really easy to replace these within the water tank on the back of your toilet, and all the hardware stores sell these with great instructions. It should take you no time at all. BUT IF ... you need to replace the whole toilet, be smart when you shop. There are labels about "WaterSense" on many models of toilets that could save thousands of gallons each year and over $2,000 in water bills over its lifetime. Wow!
What About Outside Your House
Check to make sure both the hose and the spigot are not leaking. Some people leave the spigot "on" while another spray attachment is on the other end, but one or both ends might be leaking.
A tiny leak, less than the thickness of a dime, can lead to over 6,000 gallons of wasted water every month! There are ways to check these underground pipe systems with pressure, but you can also isolate the other water sources in your house, then do the 2-hour water meter check on the irrigation system.
Leak - Leak - Leak
With this information, you should now be aware of problems that could be in YOUR house. Considering the averages for each house, which are never "average", because some houses have greater problems and some have no problems. And should your water leaks be those that cause mold, your should take this article seriously and do some checking to give you peace of mind. All of these leaks are fixable and preventable, and will save you money.
