Most of us have heard about these fences for dogs that are invisible and underground, but what exactly are they. The answer can be as simple as they are a training method to contain your cat, pet or dog, within a boundary that's buried therefore invisible and underground without any trace or sign that it even exists. This is really straight forward and simple, but there are a couple of things your should know.
There are a lot of terms that describe this TYPE of fence. Some of them are hidden dog fence, electric dog fence, underground dog fence, out-of-sight dog fence, and invisible dog fence. The actual term Invisible Fence ® and Invisible Fencing ® are brand names and registered trademarks of Radio Systems, Inc., so all of these other terms are also used to describe basically the same type of fence. But if you ask specifically for Invisible Fence ®, then that's the only one you will get. All other manufacturers do not use that trademark, although they too have underground invisible wire that's buried to form a containment boundary used to teach your dog to stay within it. Watch out for the wording.
Next is the question of why would you want to use an invisible dog/pet fence. There are several reasons but the 2 best ones are that it's cheaper than putting up a full blown above ground fence, and being underground makes it invisible and therefore does not affect your landscaping and get in your way. You will still have full use of your property, and the sight lines will not be blocked by a fence.
One of the nice things about an invisible underground dog fence is that it's only a training system. Once your dog is trained, then it doesn't have to be used, but it still remains intact in case you need to reinforce that training at a later date. This dog training system buried on your property will also add to the value of your property if you decide to sell your house, and would be a bonus if the new owners have pets. You will not have to repair this underground boundary fence ever if you buy the right equipment. But you would have to maintain the above ground fence. In other words, there is no painting or staining, boards do not need to be replaced, the unsightly weathering of fences will not take place, the underground dog fence will not fall down or be blown over in a storm, and all the other maintenance problems associated with an above ground fence will just not happen. That's a great reason to own an invisible underground dog fence.
As an expert in the Nashville area and Franklin Tennessee in particular, I strongly suggest that the most important factor of an invisible underground dog fence is the quality of the actual equipment, both the buried part and the control box. The products that are represented by your local dog fence installer need to be checked. I always encourage other dog fence experts to only use equipment of a certain standard, and equipment with a lifetime warranty.
(1) It's not harmful but it's not pleasant either, and you need to understand the training methods for dog fences so the static pulse is not used very much and it's set at the lowest setting to get results. This is in direct conflict with the same type of training collars used to stop dogs from barking, and I personally do not like static shock collars used to stop dogs from barking, because the training to stop barking (all barking) goes against all the instincts and nature of a dog. If you care about your dog, you will train them well, and your investment in an Invisible Underground Dog Fence will be well worth it.
