Derma abrasion and chemical peels work through removing certain layers of the skin. This allows the new skin, which is smoother, softer and with fewer discoloration and wrinkles to grow. Derma abrasion is generally safe if performed by knowledgeable and experienced providers.
This procedure usually works best for people with only mild or moderate sagging and wrinkles. Women who generally have such skin are those in their 30s, 40s and 50s. For women 60 years old and above, the procedure may not be as effective since their sagging and wrinkles are a lot deeper.
The human skin is composed of 3 parts, or layers. The outermost coating is the epidermis. The purpose of this layer is to make your skin waterproof. The skin layer on your face is even thinner. The dermis, or the second layer, is a lot thicker. The collagen and connective tissues that give strength to the skin can be located in this layer. The third layer, which also is the deepest, is the subcutaneous layer. This layer contains muscles, blood vessels and fatty tissue.
Chemical peel procedures involve acid being put on the skin. The purpose of this is to start a controlled burning effect, which can be a first or second degree one. This burning effect is the one that peels the skin. When the old skin finally comes off, smoother and tighter tissues form.
Derma abrasion is the method of removing skin layers through sanding off the skin with the use of a certain tool that resembles an electronic toothbrush. One benefit of derma abrasion is the accurate control of its effects depth. This procedure is most useful in fixing isolated skin problems such as raised scars, scars due to acne or other problems that need small changes over tiny areas.
Just like in derma abrasion, the purpose of chemical peel procedures is to remove certain layers of skin. Mild peel procedures involve glycolic peels or salicylic peels. These are the ones that are mostly done in spas, and in some cases in a dermatologists clinic. The procedure usually takes the epidermis off, and their results dont last long. Certain side effects are some peeling of the skin and skin redness.
Medium-level peeling procedures are mostly done in a dermatologists clinic. The most well-known is the application of trichloroacetic acid. They dont just remove the layer on top, but they also remodel the next layer of the skin. When this heals, old collagen tightens as new ones form.
Strong chemicals for peeling are available as well. Peeling with the use of phenol can cause deeper burns in the skin. Strong peels are used to treat scars, severe cases of acne, and deeper wrinkles. They are, however, not used frequently because recovering from such peels takes longer, more serious side effects can also occur, which includes permanent discoloration of the skin. Risks of heart rhythm problems may also increase.
When choosing over derma abrasion and chemical peeling, you have to consult your dermatologist because they know whats best for your skin type. They will also orient you on the possible side effects and risks as well as benefits. Besides your skins age, you should also be wary if you are prone to keloids and skin discoloration, as such conditions may not be good for derma abrasion or chemical skin peeling.
