You can opt for an auto ice scraper to remove ice or snow, to prevent windshield damage. Without a tool to protect the windshield, the moisture might just get in the laminated layers and cause damage to your windshield. It is not only the summer heat that can ruin some parts of your car, but also the winter coolness.
During the summer, the leather seats and the exterior's paint can crack. Dark paint tints are more vulnerable to cracks as they absorb more light and heat than lighter paints do. The same with heat, winter's cold temperature can permeate through the interior of your car via the windshield and the car's metallic parts. This can cause an old battery to die, and the windshield to expand and be more prone to cracking.
You can prevent windshield chips and cracks with an auto ice scraper. Although there are other methods for ice removal, they are not guaranteed to be safe for your car. A defroster can help thaw a little bit of ice, but a strong defroster might just give the glass a shock. The windshield will not break into pieces right away since it is made of laminated glass sandwiched in plastic. The plastic layers hold the glass in place. In the event of a crash, no glass shards will go flying all over the place.
A small chip or crack on the windshield is likely to spread as the bonded glass expands. This expansion can occur when the snow or ice remains on the windshield for a longer time. If windshield is not taken care of, this is more likely to happen. The appearance of cracks near their edges indicates that the windshield needs to be replaced. Unfortunately in this case, the windshield is not repairable anymore.
Another method of dealing with snow on your windshield is pouring hot water over the ice. This, however, is not really recommended. Spraying rather than pouring the hot water is a better option so as not to shock the windshield with the extreme change in tempertature.
Scraping the ice is the more popular and practical option. However, under no circumstances should the scraping be done too forcefully. This is not an assurance that the windshield will not get chipped. Scraping off the ice requires patience in manually removing the ice on the windshield. There are other ice or snow removing tools in the market that should help you with the chore.
If it is a small pile of snow or ice you have to do away with, you can use a soft brush or even a piece of cloth. Of course, you don't want to get chilly hands using them, which is why you can opt for the scraper which comes with a handle. However, the handle of ice removing tools can be a disadvantage. The shorter the handle is, the better for the one clearing the ice. If not made of quality materials, the handle can break easily.
It is a pain to clean your car's windshield in the morning, but it is better than having to replace your windshield. Having an auto ice scraper handy in the garage and in the trunk of your car will help you make a habit out of cleaning your car regularly during the winter season.
