Oolong tea is one of the most famous traditional Chinese teas; it is produced through a distinct process which includes letting the plant wither under a strong sun exposure and oxidation before being twisted and curled. A lot of fine quality teas involve distinct tea plant cultivars that are used exclusively for certain varieties. Oolong tea is translated in English as black dragon tea, and in Chinese, it is also known as qingcha or clear tea. Manufacturing of this tea is quite a complex process because some of the steps in making it should be repeated several times before the preferred browning and bruising of the leaves is attained.

There are three main explanations as to where this distinct type of tea come from. In a theory known as the tea tribute, the tea was directly derived from Dragon-Phoenix Tea Cake tea tribute. Later on, the term oolong tea took the old term's place when loose tea became popular. Since the dried leaf had a curled and long appearance that is dark in color, it was referred to as oolong or Black Dragon tea.

Based on the theory of Wuyi, the tea was introduced in the regions of the Wuyi Mountains. The proofs were Qing dynasty compositions such as Tea Tale and Wuyi tea song. It had been said that he tea was named after the area in the mountain where it was first produced.

A theory known as Anxi says that oolong tea originated from Anxi tea plant. This plant was said to be found by a man known as Wulong, Wuliang, or Sulong. One tale speaks of a man named Wu Liang who accidentally discovered the tea after he was distracted by a deer when he was picking tea leaves. By the time he remembered about his leaves, he returned to them only to find out that it had started oxidizing.

Oolong tea today is already widely consumed worldwide but it is still most popular in the Fujian province. Besides this place, it has also become popular in Taiwan, where many Fujian teas are also grown. Since the 1970s, the tea industry in Taiwan has rapidly spread.
