Many experience panic attacks at least once in their lives. This unpleasant incident is common among individuals in their late teens to early twenties though kids and older adults may also go through such kind of experience. Nonetheless, having knowledge about the frequency of panic attacks doesnt make it less difficult to manage.
These attacks may adversely affect the quality of ones life. Some who experienced severe attacks decided to stay at home; they also try to avoid the places or similar situations where they experienced the attacks. The first step in recovering and preventing the negative effects is to know which causes them.
Causes
Everyone feels panicky or anxious from time to time. This feeling isnt totally disadvantageous; in fact, it helps in managing stressful or dangerous situations. The anxiety or panic that you feel trigger your sympathetic nervous system to kick in. Adrenal glands form part of the sympathetic nervous system and these are responsible for the discharging of the hormone adrenaline. When adrenaline enters into your bloodstream and reaches various parts of your body, you respond to your stressful situation either by facing it or by running away from it. This is referred to as the fight-or-flight response.
The sensation of panic or anxiety becomes inconvenient when it causes the sympathetic nervous system to secrete too much adrenaline into the bloodstream. This results to chemical imbalance in the body which further leads to panic attacks.
The chemical imbalance may be the physiological cause of the attacks but there are triggers to such imbalance and these triggers differ from one case to another. Everyone who experienced these attacks has fears or worries in life which are different from others. Fears and worries occupy ones mind every once in a while but for those who had panic attacks, anxieties, fears or worries took over and controlled their minds before and during the attacks.
During the attacks, some of the things you may experience are shortness of breath, dizziness, blurred vision and numbness. However, the worst part of it all is when you feel several fears at once (such as fear of collapsing, fear of losing control and fear of dying from heart attack).
Cure
Conditions such as panic attacks, anxiety attacks and general anxiety disorder can make you feel like you are about to die but no one actually died because of these. The effect on your over-all well-being (inclusive of your mental, emotional and physical health), however, may last for months or even years if you try to hide from the triggers instead of treating them.
One way to recover from such conditions is to face your fears. Its like youre conditioning your body and mind not to be scared about the things that trigger your fear. Baby steps are fine. If you fear crowded places, start overcoming your fear by walking to the park every morning. After the park, go to small family gatherings. In addition to managing your fears, you should also live a healthier life exercise, eat a balanced diet, avoid vices, and learn to relax and so on.
Onlookers may suggest that you try reasoning out your fears. The fears may be irrational and exaggerated but for you, the sensation is so real. The little understanding the others have about your case may be disappointing but dont judge their attempt to helping you recover. Instead, express your gratitude for their efforts.
