Anxiety is a normal human response to stressful situations like having problems, undergoing major life events, and encountering unfamiliar circumstances. However, some people feel anxious regularly for no apparent reason. This type of irrational anxiety negatively affects a persons daily life and could keep him or her from interacting normally with other people. The symptoms of anxiety attacks could range from a regular but mild feeling of worry to abrupt attacks of panic.
One type of anxiety disorder is general anxiety disorder (GAD), which may manifest through many symptoms. These include disproportional obsession over the small or great impact of events, excessive worrying, indecisiveness, constant fear of failure and restlessness. A person with GAD is often suffering from physical symptoms like fatigue, sleeplessness, irritability, muscle tension and nervousness. There is always a feeling of imminent doom and threat to ones safety. This type of disorder keeps a person from socializing normally due to constant fear of failure and other life-threatening events. It can occur in any age, even among teenagers.
Another manifestation of abnormal anxiety is having panic attacks. These events can occur regularly at any time. Symptoms of panic attacks are more physically intense than those of anxiety; these include chest pain, numbness, sweating, rapid heart rate, sense of impending danger, fear of death or loss of control and feeling of detachment. Because of its randomness, people who suffer from this disorder fear of experiencing it in public.
Anxiety attacks are forms of mental disorder that are treatable. These disorders are commonly due to abnormal changes in brain functions, which can be controlled by medications, relaxation techniques and coping skills. The earlier the diagnosis, the better is the chance of the person to having a normal social life. Stress must also be avoided as it is one of the factors that trigger the abnormalities in the brain composition.
Living with a person with anxiety disorders or being one could seem like a social stigma. However, this should not be the case, as there are many people suffering from the same condition. The fear of being labeled as a mentally sick person is one of the main reasons why many patients do not seek help. Instead, they fall deeper into anxiety, which further develops into depression.
Our society should be more open-minded when dealing with mental disorders. People who have such disorders should not be singled out. As much as possible, their privacy should be respected. Seeking medical help means they trust the appropriate professionals to treat them without exposing their identity. Only trusted family members and friends should be involved with the treatment. Many will surely be curious but their questions should not be answered unless when the patient himself gives his permission.
In cases when the patient suffers from anxiety and panic attacks in public, the patient should be assisted to a more private place. This is especially important during panic attacks when a person physically feels like having an actual heart attack. Promoting calmness and relaxation could make a big difference in the result of the attacks. The support system of a person with mental disorder can make or break his chances of recovery.
