Many of us will agree that socializing with others, undergoing major life changes, suffering from stress and other problematic scenarios could cause us to feel anxious. In any case, the feeling of anxiety often passes quickly and we are able to resume our normal activities again. However, this is not the case for some people who experience panic attacks or suffer from generalized anxiety disorder.
People suffering from anxiety disorders experience nagging feelings of worry, fear of failure, restlessness, negative thinking and obsession over the small or great impact of almost any event on their lives. They are usually fatigued, sleepless, tensed and irritable due to overthinking. Others who suffer from anxiety attacks may manifest more intense symptoms like chest pain, numbness, sweating, a tingling sensation, trembling, rapid heart rate, hot flashes, feelings of detachment and a sense of impending doom. Both suffer from irrational anxiety and avoid socializing with people due to fear of being judged or ostracized. Indeed, society discriminates against people who have mental illness or history of such.
Due to fear of being labeled as mentally ill, people with anxiety disorders do not seek professional help. We can all help change this by showing our understanding and acceptance of their situation. Their fears and worries may have no rational basis, but these are justifiable. People with anxiety disorders suffer from changes in brain functions. This could be due to exposure to stress or it may be triggered by overwhelming emotions. We should help them control their symptoms by making them feel accepted and understood.
Self-help techniques for patients suffering from general anxiety disorder may include writing down their worries, setting limits to their episodes of anxiety and accepting the uncertainties in their situation. They should realize that their symptoms should not stop them from living their lives normally. During panic attacks, patients should be helped to do relaxation techniques. They should be given privacy in order to protect their identity and minimize their feelings of awkwardness or shame after their panic attacks.
The significant people in the lives of patients with anxiety disorder must provide a strong support network for them. Helping them feel at ease will greatly ease their feelings of inadequacy when in social situations. Professional help should be sought if the symptoms already disrupt the everyday activities of the patient. The patients will be assisted by the professional medical team to undergoing behavioral therapies. Such treatment may include assisting the patients to confront their fears and make them realize that such fears have no negative effects on them. The rationalization of anxieties is also done, to help the patient see reason. Sometimes, medications may be prescribed to help during periods of uncontrollable panic attacks.
The daily activities of patients should also be modified. They should have healthy eating habits, engage in regular exercise, must have enough sleep, and stop smoking and drinking alcohol. Keeping the body in shape is important in keeping the brain healthy, as well.
Anxiety disorders and other mental illnesses are problems that we can treat by helping each other. Our society must adopt a more open-minded approach to such illnesses. Only then will the patients be more comfortable and motivated to seek treatment. People suffering from panic attacks and general anxiety disorder should not be stigmatized.
