Companies resort to affiliate marketing or network marketing to sell products which could not be sold directly to the market. These products are expensive or the company may not have the resources to supply large markets.
But what is the difference between these two strategies?
Both affiliate marketing and network marketing almost have the same concepts. In both strategies, the marketer or agent is tasked to promote and sell the products. The marketer also earns by commission.
The differences between the two lie on the method on how the product is sold, how the marketer is paid.
How the product is sold
In affiliate marketing, the marketer promotes and sells the product thru the internet. In network marketing, the marketer promotes and sells the product thru the internet or directly to the physical target market.
In the first marketing strategy, the product is not physically presented to the consumers. The marketer only promotes it thru his web page or website and refers the buyer to the actual website of the company for the actual purchase. The affiliate does not receive any payment from the buyer or deliver the product to the buyer.
In the second marketing strategy, the marketer may present the product directly to the consumer. He promotes the product with methods other than online marketing. He is the one who receives the payment from the buyer and he is also the one who delivers the product to the latter.
In affiliate marketing, the marketer may only have to create one or two strategies to create traffic, leads or visits in his website. In network marketing, the marketer may have to design different strategies to different buyers. In a way, the latter requires more effort than the former.
How the Marketer is paid
In affiliate marketing, the payment terms and conditions are directly between the company and the marketer. Usually, the company will have the same terms and conditions to all its affiliates. There are no networks or multiple levels that would affect the compensation. Thus, the affiliates may not have to compete with his fellow affiliates, unless he wants to earn better than them.
In network marketing, the terms and conditions may vary to each individual depending on the level. The compensation he may receive will depend on his rank in the network. The higher his level is, the more compensation he will receive. This kind of compensation method may result to cannibalisation of the market among the members of the network. Some of the marketers may steal potential buyers from some of the members in order to increase their rank.
Also, in this strategy, there are various products sold but only a few may be bought by the buyer. The marketer will end up having more supply than demand. Since, the marketer paid for the other products that were not sold, his income from the other products may be curtailed. Therefore, even if the marketer made a sale, he may not earn any profit.
On the other hand, in affiliate marketing, the product being sold by the marketer is only one product. When the buyer is redirected to the company thru the website or webpage of the marketer, the buyer may have to register or subscribe to buy the product. The marketer may continue to earn commission for every succeeding purchase of the product by the buyer.
Clearly, affiliate marketing is a better career than network marketing.
