Physical inactivity is more hazardous to health as compared to obesity
Obesity is an illness which is spreading rapidly around the world these days. The increasing consumption of unhealthy food and avoidance of taking care of health is leading to the hazardous results of obesity. Obesity leads to heart attack, cancer, diabetes and various other diseases leading to early death. In a new research conducted by Cambridge University, physical inactivity leads to far more earlier deaths when compared to obesity. The probability of early death increases twice when compared to obesity.
The research was conducted on 3,34,000 European men and women to figure out the cancer and diet along with the BMI and physical activity of the person, the results showed inactivity leading to early death. People who are moderately active are still in better condition than inactive people. A simple brisk walk of twenty minutes each day is also sufficient to reduce the chances of early death. As per the study about 22% of the people participating in the research were consider inactive due to the lack of any physical workout.
Interestingly, the findings mentioned that inactive does not necessarily means obese. People with normal height and weight ratio with no physical activity are also prone to early deaths. It was also observed the diseases and illnesses were usually common between inactive and obese. It showed about 9.2 million deaths in Europe were due to obesity but the about double of this number that deaths occurred were to lack of any physical or recreational activity.
Daily brisk walking for about 20 minutes will help inactive to come into moderately active category. It burns about 100-110 calories per day similar to a normal exercise. This further reduces the chances of early deaths by about 15-30% which can further reduce with an increase in physical activity. The impact was seen on normal weighted inactive, but the benefits were equally shared with overweight and obese participants.
The alternative exercise other than brisk walking is also effective. In December 2014, a study showed that yoga was equally effective as brisk walking to reduce the cardiovascular diseases.
As government and various NGOs are working towards reducing the population, or to create more awareness about obesity. They need to also take up the issue to reduced physical activity. As this is one of the main reason leading to most illnesses causing early deaths. With the advent of technology life is getting easier and easier wherein people can buy things online also the job structures these days are becoming more chair oriented leading to minimal physical movement.
Keeping this in mind, healthcare system need to create awareness about exercises and encourage small change in their daily routines. For example, taking small walks during lunch break or walking in the park in evening instead of watching television. Infact instead of purchasing online it is better to go to the mall and shop. These small changes will help in reducing early deaths.
