Alcohol consumption can cause changes in the architecture and function of the growing brain, which continues to mature into a person's mid 20s, and it may have consequences reaching far beyond adolescence.
In adolescence, brain development is characterized by remarkable changes to the brain's architecture, neuron connectivity ("electrical wiring"), and physiology. These transformations in the brain affect everything from emerging sexuality to emotions and judgment.
Not all parts of the juvenile brain mature at the same time, which may put a juvenile at a disadvantage in certain circumstances. The limbic areas of the brain mature earlier than the frontal lobes.
How Alcohol Affects the Human Brain
Alcohol disturbs a juvenile's brain growth in numerous ways. The repercussions of minor drinking on specific brain functions are discussed below.
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. Alcohol can appear to be a stimulant because, at the start, it depresses the part of the brain that manages inhibitions.
CORTEX-- Alcohol hampers the cortex as it works with information from an individual's senses.
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM-- When an individual thinks of something he wants his body to undertake, the central nervous system-- the brain and the spinal cord-- sends a signal to that part of the body. Alcohol reduces the central nervous system, making the individual think, converse, and move less quickly.
FRONTAL LOBES -- The human brain's frontal lobes are important for planning, creating concepts, making decisions, and exercising self-control.
A person might find it hard to control his or her feelings and urges when alcohol impairs the frontal lobes of the brain. The person may act without thinking or might even become violent. Drinking alcohol over a long period of time can damage the frontal lobes forever.
HIPPOCAMPUS-- The hippocampus is the part of the human brain in which memories are made.
When alcohol gets to the hippocampus, a person may have trouble recalling something he or she just learned, like a name or a phone number. This can take place after just one or two drinks.
Drinking a lot of alcohol quickly can trigger a blackout-- not being able to remember entire happenings, like what he or she did last night.
If alcohol harms the hippocampus, an individual may find it difficult to learn and to hold on to information.
CEREBELLUM-- The cerebellum is necessary for coordination, thoughts, and awareness. A person may have trouble with these abilities once alcohol goes into the cerebellum. After consuming alcohol, a person's hands might be so tremulous that they cannot touch or take hold of things normally, and they might fail to keep their equilibrium and tumble.
HYPOTHALAMUS-- The hypothalamus is a small part of the brain that does a remarkable variety of the physical body's housekeeping chores. Alcohol frustrates the work of the hypothalamus. After an individual drinks alcohol, blood pressure, hunger, thirst, and the need to urinate intensify while body temperature and heart rate decrease.
Alcohol in fact cools down the body. Consuming a lot of alcohol outdoors in cold weather conditions can cause a person's body temperature to fall below normal.
