Pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks, starting on the day of the last menstrual period. Pregnancy stages are divided into three-month periods. Each period describes a particular stage of the babys development. Such stages are referred to as trimesters.
Implantation and Conception
Two weeks after the last period, a woman ovulates and her ovaries let go of a mature egg. This can be fertilized for up to 24 hours after being released and it travels to the uterus through the fallopian tube. If the egg meets a sperm that manage to reach the fallopian tube, they combine and form a single cell. This process is referred to as conception or fertilization.
First Trimester (1 week to 3 months)
As the woman enters the earliest pregnancy stages, she will experience several symptoms while adjusting to hormonal changes in her body. Such hormonal changes affect every organ. Those symptoms may not be evident physically, but inside her body, a lot of change are happening.
The woman may also frequently feel tired and sleepy. These symptoms are related to increasing levels of progesterone. Her uterus begins to grow and press towards the bladder, which in turn causes frequent urination. The breasts also feel tender and swollen, which is another effect of hormonal changes.
Second Trimester (4 to 6 months)
As the second trimester of pregnancy begins, the uncomfortable effects of the first trimester begin to fade away because the body has already adjusted to the hormone changes. Energy will begin to increase and sleeping becomes easier. This period is the most comfortable of the three pregnancy stages.
The pregnant woman will start feeling pelvic pressure, as if the pelvis feels heavier and something is pulling it down. The baby bump starts to appear during this period. Since the fetus becomes bigger and heavier, the mother will experience more pressure on her back due to the weight increase in her abdominal region.
In the fifth month of pregnancy, the fetus will begin to move and the mother may be able to feel those movements. The gender can also be known in this period of the pregnancy stages, and the baby will already sleep and wake up in regular cycles.
Third Trimester (7 to 9 months)
As the third trimester of the pregnancy stages begins, the uterus is further pushed into the mothers diaphragm, making it difficult for her to breathe. Since more pressure is placed on her bladder, she would have the need to pee more frequently. Back and pelvic pains will become more noticeable.
It will be more difficult for the mother to find a sleeping position during the final weeks of her pregnancy. This makes her very tired most of the time because of lack of sleep. As the time for delivery draws near, some mothers love the experience of having a baby inside them, while others dont want to go through the experience again.
During the third trimester, the baby changes his position by turning his head down in his mothers pelvis. The lungs are fully developed and the body continues to grow fast.
Those are the main stages of pregnancy, as well as the experiences and changes associated with each. If you happen to experience something that doesnt seem normal, you should immediately visit a physician.
