Miscarriage is also referred to as spontaneous abortion or loss of pregnancy. This is when the fetus or embryo naturally dies even before it independently survives.
Vaginal bleeding is the most known symptom of a miscarriage. It can manifest with or without pain. In some cases, a clot-like material might also come out of the vagina. After spontaneous abortion occurs, the mother may experience anxiety, extreme sadness, and feelings of guilt.
Miscarriage is triggered by various reasons, such as:
Old age (for either husband or wife)
Exposure to cigarette and other tobacco smoke
Diabetes and obesity
Use of alcohol or drugs
Hypertension
The risk is 10% among pregnant women who are under 35 years of age, while 45% is the risk among women 40 years old and above.
Vaginal bleeding due to miscarriage vary from light spots or discharge of brown-colored material to heavy bleeding. Bleeding may occur in one or more days. One should be cautious, though, because light bleeding may also occur during the first trimester of pregnancy but it doesnt necessarily mean that spontaneous abortion has happened.
When bleeding occurs during pregnancy, it is known as threatened miscarriage. Among the recorded number of bleeding women who sought clinical treatment, about half were actually experiencing loss of pregnancy.
Causes
Multiple pregnancy. Pregnancy of more than one baby (twins, triplets, etc.) are of higher risk. The more babies in the womb, the higher the risk.
Certain intercurrent pregnancy diseases such as:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Hypothyroidism
Vertically transmitted infections
Smoking. Tobacco smokers have higher risk of miscarriage. A significant increase in the risk is also associated with the childs father being a smoker.
Age. The mothers age is a significant component. Rates of spontaneous abortion go higher with age, with more significant increases after the age of 35.
Exercise. A study revealed that most kinds of exercises (except for swimming) are associated with higher risks before reaching 18 weeks of pregnancy. It was also noted that increased time allotted for exercise also increases ones susceptibility to pregnancy issues.
Caffeine. Consuming considerable amounts of caffeine is correlated with an increased spontaneous abortion risk.
Significant Symptoms
Besides vaginal bleeding, other symptoms you should take note of are:
Cramps
Fever
Abdominal pains
Passing of tissue
If you are a pregnant woman who has experienced at least one of these symptoms, you should contact your OB-Gyne immediately. After all, you might be facing problems due to these risk-boosting factors:
Infection
Hormonal problems and conditions
Incompetent cervix
Immune system disorders
Congenital heart problems
Thyroid problems
Certain medications
Exposure to toxic chemicals or radiation
Abnormalities in the uterine lining
Serious kidney problems
Serious cases of malnutrition.
A woman can still be impregnated after a miscarriage. About 85% of them give birth normally despite having previously suffered from spontaneous abortion. However, a woman should first talk to her healthcare provider before trying to conceive once more. Some doctors may advise to wait for a certain amount of time before trying again.
