Pregnancy is a stressful experience in a womans life. Its certainly not a stress-free journey to go through 9 months of extreme bodily changes. During pregnancy, a womans body goes through various changes, both physically and psychologically. Of a womans body, it is the endocrine system, the one responsible for the excretion of different types of hormones into the bloodstream, that bears the full brunt of these changes. Because of the fluctuating hormonal levels during pregnancy, a lot of changes may happen in a womans body. Some of these changes may appear in specific stages of gestation while the others occur throughout the whole period. This guide is all about the common bodily changes that a pregnant woman should expect once she enters that 9-month journey.
Skin Changes
During pregnancy, the skin goes through a lot of changes. All these skin changes happen because of the high amount of hormones in the body. When the uterus expands, the skin on the abdominal area gets pulled out and creates stretch marks. Weight gain is also a contributing factor to the appearance of these marks. Stretch marks are commonly seen on the thighs and breast areas.
The amount of melanin in the body also increases during the gestational period. This is the main reason why discoloration in different areas of the body such as the face and underarms appears. A dark line called the linea negra is sometimes seen on the abdominal area. However, this skin discoloration usually disappears after childbirth. If such skin lesions get pruritic or uncomfortable, application of cold compress on the affected area may relieve the symptoms. Cold compress can temporarily numb the skin and relieve the discomfort. If you are planning to use medicinal creams to alleviate the condition, it is still best to first consult your trusted physician before applying these on your body.
Increased Appetite and Weight Gain
The body needs to produce more energy to be able to support another physical being, namely the baby in the womb. As an answer to this need, the brain signals the body to require more food. In effect, a pregnant woman easily feels hunger and eats more than the usual. This is basically the reason why pregnant women have increased appetite. However, diet must still be monitored because excessive food intake can also lead to uncontrollable weight gain and other health problems. Rapid weight gain may cause gestational diabetes and macrosomia condition for the baby. Macrosomia can lead to difficult childbirth or prolonged labor. Besides the increased appetite, pregnant women also experience unusual food cravings. These cravings are also result of the fluctuating hormones in the body.
Breast Tenderness and Size
During the middle and late stages, the body secretes more estrogen and progesterone. These hormones make the breasts larger and more sensitive. A womans nipples and areolas get darker as well. Buying loose maternity clothes and loose-fitting bras will help to support the breasts and relieve the tenderness.
During the third trimester, the body anticipates breastfeeding. The body then produces hormones necessary for milk production. Because of this mechanism, the breasts release a milky discharge called the colostrum which is known as the first milk.
Other bodily changes
Aside from the ones that have been mentioned, other systems of the body are also heavily affected. During antenatal period, the large uterus compresses the stomach upward which causes gastric reflux. The uterus also tends to press on the bladder, causing frequent urination. This usually happens during the second trimester of gestation. Muscle cramps are also experienced because of electrolyte imbalances.
These things are not life-threatening bodily changes but these can still bring a lot of discomfort and frustration to pregnant women. Proper diet and moderate exercise can help to lessen the negative symptoms brought about by these changes. It is recommended that pregnant women should consult their physicians first before trying any kind of remedy or medications. A through physical examination and complete history taking are needed to fully assess a pregnant womans condition.
