At some point in every persons life, there comes a time when they start to feel afraid of the monsters that might be hiding under their beds or in the closet. Fear lingers pretty much everywhere, and there is a tradition once every year at the end of October when all the creepy creatures come out to play. That day is All Hallows Eve, more popularly known as Halloween.
Although mainstream media highlights the event in parts of North America, the celebration actually started out as a Celtic festival that signifies the end of the harvest season. In the centuries that followed, however, it became a day when people dress up in costumes of spooky creatures such as ghosts, ghouls, zombies, vampires, werewolves, and other scary beings that are designed to give you nightmares for days. Costumes are no longer limited to those of monsters and other scary creatures as people also like to dress up as noted historical figures, as famous real-life celebrities, or as characters from their favorite fantasy books, films, and television programs.
Halloween today is done with the tradition of Trick or Treating, which is when children in costumes fill the streets and knock on the houses of their neighbors. Homeowners (mainly the adults) then proceed to give these children candy and other tasty treats in exchange for them not being tricked, which usually means having eggs thrown at their houses or having rolls and rolls of toilet paper hurled across their roof and along their front yards.
During this time, houses are usually decorated with dark themed paraphernalia and any variant of scary dcor. A common house display is the Jack O Lantern, which is a pumpkin that is carved to have a scary faces. Placing a lighted candle inside makes the creation project a creepy orange glow.
Halloween is also when it is best to share scary stories. Over the years, there have been a number of competitions about horror from telling the scariest stories, to having the scariest house decorations, or even making the scariest (but still deliciously looking) cakes, and the number of contests just keep on growing.
This annual celebration seemingly takes over just about every inch of the places that are participating in it. Although it is more commonly celebrated in North America, there is still global recognition of the tradition and some countries in Europe also take part in this annual event. Countries such as the United Kingdom are well-known for throwing all-out fantastic Halloween parties in which people of all ages come to play.
For example, hardcore horror events such as Outbreak are a treat to take part in during Halloween, especially with your companions. Outbreak takes place in large closed areas where people in zombie makeup and costumes chase the groups of participants, who then try to outrun or hide from the zombie hordes.
