On the calendar, there is one day that people are really excited about because it is usually associated with spooky fashion, pumpkin-spice flavored delicacies, and parties that go well into the night: Halloween. This holiday that traces its roots back to the 17th century was popularized by Christians as the day for people to pay respects to the dead especially the saints, martyrs, and people of commendable faith. It was set to coincide with pagan festivals and was meant to convince the masses, specifically the Irish Gaelic and the Celts, from being worshippers of false gods into believers of the almighty.
Halloween got its name from the contraction of the phrase All Hallows Evening which revolves around the notion that we should use humor to deter the powers of death, hence the funny-looking costumes (known as guising back then) and ridiculous howling in Halloween music to supposedly depict and mock supernatural beings like dead spirits or characters of fiction and mythology. The olden Irish, however, start preparing for the winter at this time of year, which is known as the Samhain. They prepare themselves for the calendars darker half and does so by leading their livestock down the mountains of pasture and slaughtering them for food during the upcoming snowy months. Some scholars even argue that this day is the Celtic New Year.
Fast forward to today and the tradition of guising continues, and has evolved into something competitive. Although these kinds of contests are on a noticeably lower level than other types of pageants, participants still put in a lot of effort into the preparation and the costumes that they will wear. The prizes could only be a certificate or a small amount of cash, or compliments in-between the pulsing Halloween party music. Although we should remember that the most important thing really, is to enjoy yourself.
Wearing a costume as a kid also means that you will be trick-or-treating. The premise of trick-or-treat is simple: give treats, or prepare to be tricked. This tradition is also derived from a practice that is popular during the Middle Ages, where financially-challenged people go around the neighborhood to ask for food in exchange for solemn prayers addressed to the dead of that house. Playful pranks and other tricks may be played on you if you refuse to give a treat, although it should have no lasting effects on your property.
Just to be safe, why not give in to the Halloween spirit by handing out a few candies or chocolate bars? If youre one of the health-conscious people out there with a sincere concern for every kid that comes to the door with bag half-full, then homemade brownies or caramelized fruits can be alternatives to these prepackaged treats.
The urge to give may be stronger in more cheerful holidays like the ones in December, but to be able to give something back to other people will feel good any time of the year dont be remembered as a boring guy; be one of the cool and generous people!
