What's the cost of painting a room ? this is the most asked question from Joe Public that I get asked, and as a professional decorator I always say "it depends on how much work is involved and how long it will take me" And so I will arrange with the customer a time to visit the property that evening or at my earliest convenience.

Whenever I need to visit a customers property to work out the cost of painting a room, I make an effort to look clean and tidy, remember first impressions are everything. The first thing is to look at the job with the customer and ask them what they need doing. I then look at the condition of the walls and ceiling and the woodwork. If there is any need for repairs to plaster or woodwork I will point this out to the customer so that she is aware of work to be done to do the job properly.

I have by this time worked out in my head how long the cost of painting a room will take me and the cost of materials, I will give the customer an all in price that includes materials, that is my quote and I also give the customer a one year guarantee for the job. I will also get an idea from the customers feed back if the cost of painting a room is OK with the customer.

When I get home I will write out a job description of the cost of painting a room and what's involved and the quoted price as well as my one years guarantee. This help the customer understand what's involved and also gives them confidence that you know how to do the job and do it properly. I will email the report and wait for the reply from the customer asking me to start the job.

You don't get every job you price up with customer so you have to be competitive and also be fair to the customer, A little trick I use when I go round to price the cost of painting a room is to take a good few decorating flyers with you and post them to all the houses in the street. And also do the same when you are working on a job, post flyers with the message "we are working in (name a road) and if you need any decorating done give us a call".
