Muslin swaddle blanket is one of the best fabrics to use for swaddling babies. The material is lightweight, breathable and non-irritating. Swaddling is helpful in soothing colicky or cranky babies. It is also helpful in promoting sleep. This age-old baby care technique comes with a few guidelines to make sure that the baby is safe.
Safety guidelines when using muslin swaddle blanket
In general, swaddles are only used for the 1st 4 months of a baby's life. This is when the startle reflex is most sensitive. This reflex is what causes babies to suddenly wake up. The slightest sound or movement can cause the baby to reflexively move his/her hands outwards. In fact, it isn't the sound or movement that wakes the baby, but the hand movements associated with this reflex. When swaddled, the baby's limbs are held in place, limiting movements. But, beyond 4 months, this reflex should be gone as part of normal growth and development process. Also, beyond 4months, babies are also learning to turn over. When they do, swaddling is no longer recommended. The restricted position of the limbs while in a swaddle can be dangerous once the baby turns over onto their stomachs. At this point, muslin swaddle blankets can no longer be used as swaddles.
Also, some experts recommend that full body swaddling be done when the baby is about 60 days old. Older than this, swaddling can inhibit motor development. When swaddling babies older than 60 days old, try swaddles that allow more arm movement. Or, try other swaddling techniques that leave the arms free, such as the modified Burrito roll.
But, there are still many ways to use these, such as simple blankets or covers for surfaces where the baby will lie down. Nursing mothers can use it as a cover, too. These swaddle blankets can also be used as burp cloths or additional protection covering over cribs or strollers. But, it can no longer be as a swaddle when the baby is older.
Another safety guideline is never to put the baby to sleep on their stomach, whether in a swaddle or not. The risk of SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is highest when babies sleep on their stomachs.
Also, when using muslin swaddle blankets or any other swaddling blankets, make sure that it is loose enough to allow some movement, especially in the feet and over the chest. The swaddle should not be too tight that the baby can no longer breathe easy. Also, never leave a pacifier in the baby's mouth when swaddled. The baby cannot spit the pacifier out because it is held in place by the swaddle. This can lead to difficulty breathing or even choking and suffocation.
Muslin swaddle blanket is among the top picks for swaddles because the fabric is light and won't smother the baby. Avoid wrapping it too tight, though. Choose breathable fabrics so that the baby won't get too hot inside. Babies have poor temperature regulation and can easily overheat.
