For centuries, baby swaddles has been one of the effective ways of calming crying and colicky babies. Several techniques are used in swaddling babies. The entire body can be swaddled, or just the baby's arms. Tightness can vary from snugly tight to secure but loose. But before any of the techniques can be employed, the very first step is to choose the right material to use for baby swaddles.
The very first thing to consider in choosing the cloth is the weather. The material should be thick and cozy if to be used during colder weather. Swaddles can be used in hot weather, too. Choose lighter and breathable fabrics for the warmer season.
Fabrics for baby swaddles
Basically, any blanket or piece of cloth can be used as a swaddle. But, in order to be safe, choose appropriate fabrics. The best ones include organic muslin, gauze and cotton flannels that are super soft. Cotton and gauze are most appropriate for the hot summer weather. Muslin can both be used in hot and colder weather. For the colder days, use fleece or flannel cloth.
The main consideration is the feel of the cloth. It should be soft and non-irritating to the baby. Also, the cloth should be lightweight so as not to smother the baby during sleep.
Also, experts advise choosing cloth made from organic materials or those that have been organically manufactured. As much as possible, avoid cloth that have been dyed or bleached because the chemical residues can be irritating to the baby's skin.
Types of baby swaddles
Centuries back, swaddles are just large pieces of cloth. Today, there are many types of swaddles. Parents can choose from simple square blankets to specially-made woombies.
Some swaddling blankets come with Velcro trims. Velcro is used to secure the ends of the blanket after the swaddle is made. Parents have more confidence that the baby remains securely tucked into the swaddle and the swaddle won't come undone when the baby moves.
Some swaddles come with a zipper in front. These come in zip-size sacs. The zipper across the front of the blanket when the ends are brought together comfortably tucks the baby in. This towel comes with flaps and pouches to help guide parents where to place the baby's arms and legs and how to tuck properly and securely. There are no zippers or Velcro.
Specially-made baby swaddles are also now available. There is one called Miracle blanket, made from Turkish towel fabric, which has flaps designed to hold the baby's arms and legs in place. Another is the Sleep Sack. This is a kind of swaddle that is worn like a dress. In the upper portion, there are flaps designed to hold the baby's arms in place.
Woombies and swaddle pods are the simplest of all pre-made baby swaddles. These look like large peanuts and are made from stretchy fabrics. These look like large cocoons for babies. Inside, the babies are held tight. The stretchy fabric still allows movement.
