Florida is a state of many pests including Scorpions. Fortunately for residents, scorpions found throughout the state of Florida are not deadly. According to researchers at the University of Florida Extension Entomologists, out of the 1300 species worldwide there are only 90 species of scorpions located in the United States, only 3 of the species are found within Florida and these 3 do not have lethal stings. However, they are still considered a pest and will produce painful stings to humans and pets. If a non-native species of scorpions is found in Florida, then it at some point it was a pet release or one that escaped. These cases are rare.
Scorpions are easily identified as no other pests resembles them. Many Floridians describe them as a crab or lobster looking creature. They range from brown to dark brown and are approximately one to four inches long. Scorpions have a flattened body with 8 legs and two appendages with the "pinchers", the pedipalpi. The scorpion is infamous for their curled stinger or tail. The tail is long and typically curled above the scorpion's body with the stinger at the end. This is their best form of defense and also used to capture their prey. The life span of a scorpion is up to 5 years.
Venom found within the scorpion's stinger is a nerve poison. Fortunately for Floridians they will not have to worry about lethal scorpion stings. However, the stings is painful more so than a wasp sting and allergic reactions are common. The spot where the scorpion's sting will swell and become red. Scorpions do not sting humans unless for example trapped under clothing, in bed sheets, or held in hand. It is recommended that if a person were stung to seek medical attention to ensure the person's safety. Antivenin is commonly used for scorpion stings.
Florida scorpion species are found in different regions of the state. The largest sized scorpion found in Florida is the Slender Brown Scorpion or also known as the Florida bark scorpion. This species of scorpion is located in all areas. This scorpion is commonly found on trees or under logs or bark. The Slender Brown Scorpion is commonly brought into the home by accident for example, firewood. The second species of scorpion found in Florida is the Hentz striped scorpion. This is the most encountered species found statewide except the lower keys. The Guiana striped scorpion is the third species and is only found within Collier, Miami-Dade, and Monroe Counties.
If residents of the state are concerned about the scorpions they may be encountering, contact a local licensed pest management company to assist in the removal and prevention of scorpions. Reynolds Pest Management, Inc has many years of experience in handling scorpion encounters and can aid in your assistance with this pest.
