A foot balm is a topical product that gives hydration for dry feet.
The cold winter months and the hot summer season can dry your skin, making it rough and flaky, because your body loses water in these seasons. By winter, you tend to urinate more often, while during summer, you sweat more. Being on the extreme-most part of your body, your feet receive the least water among all body parts - much lesser on the peak months. Thus, your feet dry out, making the undesirable (and sometimes painful ) cracks on your heels. These cracks are technically open wounds, thus they are prone to infections especially that the feet touch directly to the ground that has lots of bacteria and viruses on it.
Aside from lack of moisture, other factors can contribute to your cracked heels. If your work requires you to stand or walk almost all day, especially on hard flooring , you tend to have cracked heels. If you have fungal infections on your feet like athlete's foot or eczema, have chronic ailments like psoriasis, thyroid disease, or diabetes, or lack in Vitamin A, omega-3 fatty acids, and/or zinc, then you also tend to have cracked heels. Obesity can also contribute to your cracked heels, as your feet should resist the physical pressure of carrying excess body weight; thus the skin on your feet expands too much that it loses its elasticity and instead tear apart. Even the simplest wearing of flip-flops, if done so often, can make you suffer from cracked heels.
With its deep moisturizing power, the foot balm can minimize - if not eliminate - the cracks on your heels. The most typical foot balm include coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, lanolin, and Vitamin E oil. These oils and protein-based ingredients lock in moisture to make your feet well hydrated and nourished especially after washing them.
In shopping for your foot balm, do not go for those containing fragrances, as these sweet smelling yet harmful chemicals can enter the cracks and into your body. Instead, find for those containing essential oils with therapeutic effects like myrrh oil and lavender oil. Both myrrh and lavender cleanses bacteria and viruses away from your feet, protects them from infections, and soothes them.
Before using the foot balm, you must first soak your feet in a basin of warm water mixed with Epsom salt and a few drops of lavender oil, and then scrub them with a pumice stone to scrape away the calluses that make up the cracks on your heels - those calluses are actually hardened dead skin tissues. After soaking and scraping your feet and while still damp, apply the foot balm on them generously . You can also wear an old pair of socks overnight after the procedure to soften your feet further. You can also apply the foot balm on other dry and chapped body parts like lips, nose, and cheeks.
