A BB cream is an all in one facial product that has the combined functions of moisturizer, makeup foundation, and sunscreen. You can apply it solely as a tinted moisturizer, or used after regular moisturizer and before powder as a foundation. Unlike the typical makeup foundations, BB creams come in only one shade that blends in with the skin's natural color, although some brands sell them in many shades. The best advantage of BB creams is that since it is moisturizer and makeup foundation in one, you will not feel heavy on your face because you are just wearing one product instead of two.
In the 1960s, Dr. Christine Schrammek, a German dermatologist, first formulated the first BB cream for use on her patients to protect their faces after peeling procedures and surgical operations. "BB" stands for "blemish balm" and "blemish base" in the Asian market, and "beauty balm" in the Western market. Since 1985, local markets in Korea and Japan have already sold BB creams, which came in limited shades only before; and in 2012, it conquered the Western market.
- Each bottle of the BB cream contains the following ingredients:
- Glycerin that moisturizes the skin
- Silicone-based ingredients like dimethicone that smoothens the skin just like what a primer does
Mica (a main ingredient in the much expensive mineral makeup) that gives a luminous finish to the skin
Whitening ingredients like arbutin and licorice that even out skin tone and conceal dark spots
Anti-aging ingredients like peptides (aids in the production of new collagen for a firmer and more lifted skin) and antioxidants (fights free radicals that damage skin cells) including Vitamins A, C, and E
Sunscreen ingredients like zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide that makes the formulation resist with water, so your makeup will not go with your sweat
Like what was mentioned earlier, with the multipurpose benefits of the BB cream, you can use it as an alternative to your regular moisturizer and/or makeup foundation - BUT not the anti-aging cream. BB creams may have anti-aging ingredients, but its concentrations are not enough for you to switch from your anti-aging product to this. Problems also go for those who have acne-prone skin as they have to apply a separate product for that purpose prior to the BB cream since BB creams have sunscreen and an FDA regulation states that sunscreen and anti-acne ingredients should not be in one single product together.
If you are more concerned of your dark spots and uneven skin tone, there are now CC creams available in the market. The CC cream that means "color control" has more coverage compared to the BB cream, but still lightweight and easy to apply - think of the sheer foundation. For dry skin, you can use DD creams that mean "daily defense" or "dynamic do-all." The DD cream is much like the BB cream except that it has more moisturizing powers than the other formulations.
