At as early as their mid-twenties, women already experience the signs of skin aging - wrinkles, sagginess, uneven complexion, among all others. Skin aging is primarily due to certain harmful factors - mostly connected to their lifestyle - like pollution, stress due to heavy workload and lack of adequate rest, poor diet, and sedentary living . For them to look their ages, women spend money on clinical anti-aging treatments, and make use of products like the anti-aging moisturizer.
Aside from giving moisture to the skin since aging actually starts from dryness, every anti-aging moisturizer formulation targets specific problem areas depending on its active content. For example, Vitamin A, in the form of retinyl palmitate, prevents the breakdown of collagen (the natural substance that makes our skin firm) by harmful compounds, and even helps in the production of new collagen for the skin.
Upon application, retinyl palmitate first turns into retinol, and then further turns into retinoic acid to perform the anti-aging function. However, at excessive amounts, retinyl palmitate may cause cancer. Pregnant and lactating women should also not apply products containing retinyl palmitate.
An anti-aging moisturizer can also contain any of the skin exfoliating acids like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). These acids remove the dead skin cells that make the skin look dry and rough, making the skin look fresh and revitalized.
Alpha hydroxy acids, usually extracted from fruits and other foods, act mildly on skin - examples are glycolic acid (from sugarcane), citric acid (from citrus fruits), malic acid (from apples), lactic acid (from milk), and tartaric acid (from grapes). Beta hydroxy acids are of average yet tolerable strength. Aside from removing dead skin cells, it also controls the excretion of sebum that culprit in the formation of acne - the best example is salicylic acid.
Stronger acids and formulations used exclusively in clinical skin peeling - not in over-the-counter topical products - include the Jessner's peel solution (an ethanol-based formulation of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol), the retinoic acid that removes wrinkles and scars, and the croton oil (phenol) that made superstars from old Hollywood look younger than their real ages.
However, any anti-aging moisturizer containing AHAs or BHAs may give you adverse effects like redness, stinging, dryness, and irritation, although these reactions are just preliminary and only shows that the formulation takes effect on your skin.
Peptides are the ones responsible for healing wounds; and they are now included in some anti-aging moisturizer formulations because of its ability to produce new collagen for the skin. Perfect examples are argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-3) and copper peptide (GHK-Cu). However, skin care products containing peptides are much expensive.
Whether your anti-aging moisturizer contains any of the mentioned ingredients, you should apply your product religiously or your wrinkles and sagginess will go back - anti-aging products and treatments are not actually instant solutions. In addition, anti-aging products do not assure of replicating the results that you can get from clinical treatments, so it is still advisable to have regular visits to a dermatologist.
