A glow stick is a single-use, translucent plastic tube that contains a glass vial which produces light after the tube is bent. It doesn't use any electricity. This is why it is considered a safety light and is perfect for use in emergency situations. Because glow sticks come in a variety of colors, they are also used as accessories and decorations. To a probing eye, it's a wonder how this cool invention is made. There is definitely an explanation behind its ghostly light emission and how it gives off such brightness without a bulb, batteries, and electricity.
Chemicals Inside
The vial is floating in the middle of light sticks houses a chemical substance that, when combined with the chemicals contained inside the stick itself, accelerates a reaction that creates a fluorescent light. The glass vial typically contains hydrogen peroxide, which acts as the activator while the solution where the vial is floating inside the stick is composed of phenyl oxalate ester and a fluorescent dye solution.
Light, as a type of energy is commonly produced by heat or radiation. Glow sticks employ a different kind of process called chemiluminescence, which means the light is produced without the use of heat; instead it is a product of a chemical reaction. Luminescence, in particular is the method used for other glowing stuff such as neon lights and glow-in-the-dark stickers. The same principle makes a firefly light up and certain rocks glow in the dark.
The Reaction
When the tube is cracked, bent or shook, the vial inside breaks, releasing the hydrogen peroxide. When the hydrogen peroxide mixes with the phenyl oxalate ester, it produces phenol as well as peroxyacid ester, an unstable chemical which decomposes and turns into a cyclic peroxy compound. Further decomposition happens until it breaks down into carbon dioxide. This process releases energy to the dye atoms causing the electrons in them to rise to a higher level then return to normal. When the electron falls back down after the jump, they free energy in the type of light.
What about the Colors?
Light sticks glow in different colors rendering more fun and entertainment. Those colors are determined by the dye solution which is inside the chamber of the tube. It is one of the two chemical compounds wherein the fragile vial is drifting right in the middle. Bending the stick allows the two solutions to flow together, causing a chemical reaction that produces light. The distinctive bright color can be altered by the manufacturer depending on the kind of chemical dye used.
An Extra Glow
The length of time the chemical reaction will emit light is dependent on the compounds used. Exposing the glowsticks to heat will actually shorten this time period but will activate a brighter light. Heating the solutions will provide extra energy, speeding up the chemical reaction and making the light glow brighter. On the other hand, the reaction will slow down, and the light will also become considerably dimmer when you put the chemical light sticks in the freezer.
