What happens when we age? In particular, what happens when our skin ages? Our skin goes through a lot of changes as the years go by, and it does not only result to wrinkles or age spots, there are other undesirable alterations that will inevitably occur, greatly affecting our appearance and health.
1. Elasticity Issues
Aging renders our skin loose. The skin's elastin and collagen fibers, the body's elastic tissue, break down. With no elastin to hold our skin, it becomes loose, losing its ability to snap back to shape after stretching. Furthermore, the fatty layers below the skin in our face, particularly the chin, cheeks, eye area and nose, will be greatly reduced leaving us with droopy eyelids, eyebrows and sunken cheeks. This is the reason why old people usually have a slightly skeletal facial appearance. The fat loss also makes the skin less smooth.
The loss of elastin and collagen triggers other undesirable changes. As early as the age of 30, people may notice the development of lines and wrinkles. Facial lines usually show on the forehead, above the root of the nose, on the upper cheeks and around the mouth.
2. Skin will dry out
Over time oil glands will get depleted, hence skin will become dry.
3. Skin will be more translucent
Older people will notice an increased transparency on their skin because the epidermis, which is the upper layer of our skin is already thinning.
4. Skin becomes more delicate
More than ever, the skin becomes fragile because of aging. There are two layers of the skin, the epidermis (outer) and the dermis (inner). The area between these two adds more protection against injuries and other foreign substances (e.g. bacteria) that could invade our body. Aging triggers the flattening of such area, hence the increased skin frailty.
5. Skin gets bruised easily
Similar to nearly everything else, the walls of our blood vessels will get thinner as we age. Consequently, the skin becomes more prone to even the slightest bumps that can result to bruising. This also makes healing time longer after an injury.
6. Skin may develop lesions
It is also possible for the skin to have benign tumors and other lesions.
One of the major factors that speed up skin aging is sun exposure. Another is cigarette smoking. These two will speed up wrinkling and cause other health problems. To lessen the harsh effects of sunlight on the skin, it is best to avoid getting under the sun when it is strongest, or if unavoidable, use sunscreen and protective clothing.
Aging skin can also be revitalized using natural oral and topical products containing vitamin C. A potent antioxidant, vitamin C reduces sun damage. Vitamin C is an anti-wrinkle agent since it is essential for the production of the elastic protein collagen. The breakdown of collagen is what gives way to the emergence of wrinkles. Therefore, increasing the vitamin C levels of the skin will also increase collagen production and halt wrinkle formation.
