There's no two ways about it - coffee is the world's favorite beverage. Whether you're visiting Hong Kong, Kentucky, Italy or the Middle East, you'll likely be greeted with a selection of steaming hot java. Coffee is one of the oldest drinks known to mankind and the beverage is hailed for its ability to awaken and rejuvenate the mind and body.
Varieties
Coffee comes in a huge selection of varieties. The term coffee is used to describe everything from actual coffee to espresso, depending on where you live. Different varieties of coffee can be achieved by harvesting different strains of coffee beans or by roasting them differently. The roast often determines the intensity of the brew, though the varieties of bean also plays a role in the finished product.
The most commonly consumed coffee types are Columbian and Arabica. These two coffees produce a medium to dark roast that is smooth, rich and full bodied. It is possible to get a more intense flavor from either variety of bean by simply choosing a different roast. The longer the beans are roasted, the stronger the resulting cup of coffee.
Gourmet coffee beans are also available and usually include a flavoring to give the coffee a unique taste. Sometimes, gourmet blends are made by combining several types of coffee bean together into a proprietary composition of bean types, roasts and flavors.
Espresso is a term that refers to a particular type of coffee. Espresso is not made from a specific bean, but rather a specific roast level and brewing process. The roast level of espresso varies by region. The drink was developed in Italy and differences in espresso are still seen today. In the south, a darker roast is preferred, while in the north, a lighter roast is more common. The beans are finely ground and water is pressed through at a high pressure, resulting in a thicker coffee with more dissolved solids.
Caffeine
All coffee contains caffeine. Decaffeinated coffee has had most of the caffeine removed through an artificial process. The resulting beverage still has small amounts of caffeine, but not enough to be noticed. Half-caf varieties are available commercially for those looking to reduce their caffeine intake without going cold turkey.
The amount of caffeine in coffee varies by the roast and type of bean used. Espresso has the highest caffeine concentration, making it a great choice for mornings and occasions when a caffeine boost is required.
