Hyperthermia is a condition wherein the body temperature rises abnormally. There are several manifestations or types of hyperthemia: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Heatstroke is the most fatal form and needs urgent medical attention. It could lead to death if proper medical treatment is not given. If you notice warning signs of heatstroke, you must act immediately to prevent further injury or damage.
One of the basic first aids for heatstroke is cooling the patient. Keep the person hydrated and refrain from any physical activity. Never leave the house without recyclable water bottles filled with cold water. Athletes, infants, elderly and workers doing physical jobs outdoors are the most prone to heatstroke. No wonder you often see an athlete carrying a sport water bottle with strap when training. Heatstroke usually hits people over their fifties but it takes its toll on people who are younger like healthy athletes. That's why it's important to keep at least a sports water bottle 20 oz handy.
Human body produces heat that results from metabolism. The body disperses heat through the skin in the form of sweat. In cases where humidity is high, the body is incapable of dissipating heat and as a result, the temperature rises up to 41.1 Celsius.
Besides heat, another cause of heatstroke is dehydration. If a person is dehydrated, he or she does not generate sweat fast enough to discharge heat out of the body. This is what causes the temperature to rise. Hence, always make sure to stock up on water in camping water bottle that you can easily stow away in your bag or car.
Heatstroke among Children
While elders over fifty are the most susceptible age group to be hit by heatstroke, infants can also suffer from it. Infants or younger children left unattended in a locked car could suffer from heatstroke. Even in moderate weather, the temperature inside the car can go up. Babies who are overly bundled in a crib may also suffer from heatstroke. For parents, make it a habit to lock cars when not in use. This will prevent young kids from getting in the car and possibly getting trapped.
Symptoms of Heatstoke
Sometimes, the signs of heatstroke can be mistaken for heart attack. It is then very important to be very mindful of the other symptoms. The most obvious symptom of heatstroke is a body temperature that is extremely high. Other indications include:
- Fainting
- Vomiting
- Queasiness
- Throbbing headache
- Reddish and dry skin
- Light-headedness
- Cramps or weakened muscles
- Rapid and shallow breathing
- Strong/weak rapid heartbeat
- Absence of perspiration despite very high temperature
- Confusion
- Unconsciousness
- Seizures

- Dial 911 for help.
While waiting for medical response, bring the victim to an air-conditioned room or any cold place.
Take off any clothes, which may cause discomfort, and more heat.
While fanning a patient, moisten the skin with water using a damp towel. So, it's really advisable to have a water bottle nearby.
Lower down the body temperature by applying ice pack to areas where blood vessels are close to the skin like the neck, back, groin, and armpits.
If the cooling procedure you did does not work, give the patient an ice bath.
When there is a delay in emergency response, better call the hospital or a follow up call to 911 for further first aide tips.
Never delay giving first aide or seeking medical attention as soon as you see even one of the symptoms of heatstroke.
