Few things are as refreshing on a hot summer's evening as a chilled glass of wine or beer (provided you be above the age of 18 or 21, of course). This is why there are those who have personal wine chiller stick bottles within them, so that they can have access to an ice-cold flute of wine whenever the need strikes.
Unfortunately, not everyone is in possession of his or her own personal wine chiller or has access to one. On the other hand, there are other methods for chilling your bottle of wine or beer apart from placing it inside the kitchen refrigerator.
The following are just some of the popular ways for accomplishing this:
The ice bucket method. Immersing a bottle of wine or beer in a lot of ice is a surefire method of bringing the temperature of its contents down pretty fast. For best results, use a metal bucket, carefully position the bottles of wine in the makeshift wine chiller (stick them in carefully), and then carefully add the ice.
The wet paper towel trick. Get a sheet or two of sturdy paper towels, moisten them slightly under the faucet, and then wrap them around the wine bottle. Use your freezer as a de facto wine chiller, stick the paper towel-wrapped bottle in then wait for about fifteen minutes before taking the bottle out. The wet paper towel will help cool the bottle down faster, but be careful not to leave the bottle in the freezer for too long. The extreme drop in temperature can cause the wine to expand, uncork the bottle and the contents to spill out all over your freezer.
Using a wine chiller stick. Most department stores sell affordable wine chiller sticks that are great for chilling your bottles of wine or beer in a jiffy. Simply put the wine chiller stick in the freezer or refrigerator for a couple of hours and then pour your wine or beer into its receptacle. Your beverage of choice should be ready for consumption in a matter of minutes.
Adding salt and water to your ice bucket prior to chilling. The salt causes the ice to melt faster, but the resulting heat transference also makes the temperature of the water colder, making it a lot easier for your wine or beer bottle to get chilled quickly.
After dumping ice all over the bottle of wine or beer in your metal bucket, combine about half a cup of rock salt with roughly the same amount of warm water. Slowly pour the salt-water mixture over the ice bucket and wait for about fifteen minutes. The bottle of wine or beer should be ready for consumption by then.
Note: If you do not have any rock salt on hand, then you can use plain cold water. Pour in about a cup of cold water over the ice, and leave to chill.
