A few decades ago, printing 3-dimensional (3D) prototypes out of thin air was an impossibility even if Star Trek had everyone believing otherwise. It has to be noted, though, that several creative minds have already tried creating 3D prototypes since the late 1800's. These were mostly experimental and never gained a lot of financial support from huge industries mainly because they still lacked the advanced technology to turn the prototypes into something useful.
Fast forward to the 21st century, people are now printing 3D versions of almost anything under the sun. Most of them can even do this while sitting within the comfort of their own homes, as long as they can afford the often steep price for a 3D printer, the cheapest of which cost a little over USD$500.
Some of the most amazing things that have been created using a 3D printer include:
Replicas of some of the most expensive classic car models, such as the Aston Martin DB5 that was used in the 2012 James Bond movie Skyfall.
Replicas of musical instruments, especially the guitars and drum sets that have been used by some of the most famous rock stars in the world. Recently, some people have also been able to print a fully functioning acoustic guitar. It looked so much like the real thing with the metal cover on its soundhole, as well as the perfectly shaped heel joint.
Heddle Loom. If you are not amazed by the first two creations yet, then be amazed with this one. Just like any other loom, a Heddle Loom contains many intricate details that are often difficult to replicate manually, much less with the use of a 3D printer.
All these examples serve to show just how far the human race has come in terms of technological advances. The initial innovators who first thought of 3D prototypes would not have thought it was possible to print out a human organ using a 3D printer. However, this has been proven false by the fact that human organs can now be printed using live human cells. This is something that the creators of the famous TV show Grey's Anatomy tried to get the public to witness in its 10th season.
One episode of that season was completely focused on the lead character, Dr. Meredith Grey, trying to print a sheep's pancreas using the ailing sheep's cells. She ended up printing a fork instead, while her colleague, Dr. Christina Yang, printed a baby's portal vein using the same 3D printer. In the episode, the process for printing usable human organs was discussed in detail.
Proponents of 3D printing, including the Grey's Anatomy characters, all agree that 3D printing provides a lot of benefits not just for the medical world but for the product manufacturing industry as well. With the help of a 3D printer, manufacturers can print out prototypes of new products before rolling them out to the public. This way, they can easily customize the different aspects of the products and make adjustments whenever necessary.
