Recent advancements in the area of animal research suggests that the use of antibiotics as additive for animal feeds could pose serious problems both on animals and humans. Thus, there has been a growing number of movements to ban the use of antibiotics and to promote the use of alternatives from yeast emerged.
Antibiotics have been added in animal feeds since 1977 in order to promote or speed up their growth. These antibiotics were given to animals in order to prevent the occurence of possible infectious agents that could harm them.
However, studies and several relevant news items show that the continuous exposure of bacteria to antibiotics may lead to the development of the bacteria's resistance from antibiotics. As such, when these bacteria entered the system of animals, it could also be transferred to humans who consumed the said animals. These could cause infections to humans that would be detrimental to their health and could be difficult or impossible to treat.
As such, there has been an international effort to combat the use of human antibiotics in animal feeds. The United States initiated this move through the introduction of the "Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act of 2009." Consequently, further bills to prohibit the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics for animals in other countries, including South Korea, Chile, Netherlands, and Bangladesh were also passed.
Several international organizations around the world such as the Food Animal Concerns Trust, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Natural Resources Defense Council have also supported the legislation to ban the incorporation of antibiotics in animal feeds.
In 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration reported that the amount of antibiotics used in food-producing animals in 2009 is approximately 13 million kg. There were no official reports about the amount of antibiotics used in the past, but according to credible world news, the numbers were only between 8 million to 11 million kg.
Furthermore, current news have shown that in the United States, about 70% of all the human antibiotics produced were given to animals. In Europe, about 50% of human antibiotics were given to animals.
Experts in the field of microbiology believe that the unhealthy use of antibiotics in animals could only be totally eradicated if there is an available local source of alternatives for such antibiotics.
Also, as stated in scientific articles in respected journals, instead of eradicating the possible infectious agents, the animals' immune system must instead be enhanced. Thus, the use of stimulants must be promoted.
It was later found that the most promising stimulants which include the beta glucan, glucans, nucleotides and manan olygosaccharides (MOS) all come from yeast.
Fruits of research also suggest that yeast extracts help boost the immune system's ability to kill bacteria. Hence, there is a need to develop more and advanced procedures of developing stimulants from yeast especially in countries rich in such substance. This could greatly help in deteriorating the threats of using antibiotics in animal feeds. Eventually, this may even lad to the total eradication of antibiotics in most animal feeds.
