Driven by the immense demand for commodities, an increasing world population trade wildlife across nations, disregarding the negative effects and the prohibitions of the law.
Economy experts believe that wildlife trading is drastic because commercial interest comes in. Wildlife species have great market value (a marketable commodity).
Based on a 2010 report, an estimate of 25,000 - 30,000 primates, 2-5 million birds, 10 million reptile skins and 500 million tropical fish were caught annually from the wild to be used as pets, food, clothing or traditional medicines and for entertainment or specialist collections. Tigers, rhinoceros and reptiles are among the most desired species in the black market, experts reported.
Usually, wild animals are used in traditional medicines in many nations including China, Brazil and Vietnam. In the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), rhinoceros' horns are ground for its believed ability to cure fevers, convulsions and delirium. According to the World Wildlife Fund, only about 2,800 Sumatran, Javan and Indian species of the rhinoceros in Asia and 3,100 black rhinoceros in Africa are left.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 80% of the world population depends on medicines derived from plants and animals for their health care needs. Annually, the global market for these medicines is currently over US $60 billion.
However, the demand for wild animals in the global market is not only because of its use as a traditional medicine. Wild animal parts, specifically fur and hide, are also widely used for clothing and accessories. Livestock animals, alligator and snake skins are the most commonly used for this purpose. According to PETA, 85% of the skins used in fur industry come from fur factory farms which houses thousands of animals.
According to World Watch Institute, smugglers of threatened species earn profits of $8 billion to $12 billion every year. In the United States, exotic pets like the Komodo dragon of Indonesia, sell for about $30,000 each on the black market.
In general, wildlife trading could be considered as illegal if it becomes extensive while not adhering to the guidelines stated in the law. If the trading of a particular species threatens its existence and if it does not acquire consent from the authorities, then the trading must be punished.
The process of illegal trading is brutal: the collected wild animals are dragged, crammed and have their mouths taped during the transport. Most animals die during the transport and this lead to even greater collecting of wild animals.
Illegal wildlife trading is among the worst in grand world affairs. It poses serious threats to the environment as it may lead to the extinction of the traded species. Every part of the ecosystem interacts and affects the other. If one species was cut off, the whole ecosystem may collapse. Humans can be directly affected by the excessive trading of wild animals given that it may lead to the corruption of public officials and even to spread of diseases.
What we need is strict implementation and general awareness. Reinforced laws were only one solution to one side of the problem. The other half concerns the people.
