Is Dating Someone From The Office Something That Should Be Avoided?
Office dating relationships are fraught with challenges and sometimes, outright problems. However, young professionals who spend more time at the office than they do at home or perfecting their hobby, may naturally seek their potential mate within their surrounding environment-the office.
Some singles believe that the workplace is a natural place to meet new people. Here is an environment rich with individuals with similar backgrounds and interests, and often ages. It can be tempting because it doesn't take too much work to begin socializing.
Dating someone from the office used to be an entirely taboo subject. Today, however, many professionals are finding that it's more and more acceptable. It is incredibly difficult to develop an office dating romance and continue to act professionally. It is for this reason that most workplaces will set boundaries and guidelines, some even having an official romance policy. These policies set out clear rules and boundaries that, if broken, can lead to dismissal.
The long of the short of it is that dating in an office setting should never be attempted. If both persons feel inexplicably drawn to each other then it is in their best interest for one to find another position or work on another floor of the office. An office romance can have consequences for both people's careers that are often not planned.
In the beginning of a relationship, when love has a firm grip on the heart, we don't think these things through and we don't consider the consequences. But, if we proceed to mix our love life with work life we place ourselves under a significant amount of stress and increase the risk that one, the other or both will suffer work related consequences and may even significantly damage a career.
It may be tempting to believe that one of the positive aspects of dating someone from the office is that it is time efficient. Why look around for someone else to date when you have an office full of beautiful women or attractive men. After all you will save time and money. Another distractible criteria is that people who date from the workplace believe that they have an idea already of what that other individual is all about. But these are far from positive aspects when weighed against the inevitable negative drawbacks.
Individuals who get involved at work often find that this romance interferes with their ability to perform their professional duties. Conflicts ensue both between the two individuals and others who know of the relationship. It may be difficult to keep the romance a secret, especially when one has to fire the other. More friction can occur when two individuals spend all day at work together and then the your evenings together as well. There seems to be no time to spend alone or hanging out with friends.
And before asking anyone out, or going out with anyone from work, you need to ask yourself couple of questions. For instance, how comfortable are you going to feel working in the same office with someone you went out on a date with last night? Are either one of you emotionally volatile and what would happen if you thought it work? Can you trust the other person to be discreet, if you tell them your secrets will they end up published in the gossip column at work?
And above all else, before even considering an office romance you must be aware of any written policy of your employer. Are you even allowed to date someone you work with? Read the policies carefully before proceeding or you may find that the romance is quashed, not because you didn't get along but rather because your boss isn't on board.
If you decided to take the plunge, and date someone from within your work environment, it's important to keep the romance something of a secret. Before deciding to "go public" with your relationship and disturbed the delicate balance of interrelationships between coworkers, wait to see if this romance has a chance of growing into something lasting.
And, there are several things that you should never do. First and foremost you must understand the challenges and dangers of dating someone who is either a subordinate or a boss. In one case or the other you can be charged with sexual harassment or favoritism, neither of which looks good on your resume. Next, never talk about or gossip about anyone, especially business associates, clients or customers. And finally, never discuss business unless both of you are privy to the same information. By leaking information to another coworker you are setting yourself up to be fired.
Although it's in your best interest to find romance outside of the office, if you find yourself drawn romantically to an individual who you believe holds great potential for long lasting relationship it may be a step you both might take. Through open communication about the risks and the pitfalls as well as maintaining certain rules, you just may be able to pull it off.
