Some people prefer having cats because cats require much less maintenance compared to dogs. However, most cat owners ignore the fact that cats need to be trained, too. Cats are naturally playful, curious, and nimble so it is unavoidable that they would land or play with unsafe objects around your house. Things like live wires, plugged appliances, and even gas range can pose dangers for your pets. Cats would sometimes bring dead mice or birds to their owner and leave it rotting somewhere inside the house. Male cats also have a tendency to mark their territories by peeing on them. If cats are untrained, having them as house pets can be worse than having an untrained dog because cats do not respond as well as dogs. Here are some tips on how to discipline cats as pets:
Cats are not dogs
Cats are feline creatures with a different set of instincts compared to dogs. Cats are more inclined to their survival instincts whereas dogs treat their owner as their "parent", running to them if they feel threatened. Cats usually associate your punishments with you as a person so if you punish them physically, they will learn to fear you and in turn, flee away from you as much as possible. Spanking them or hitting them physically is a sure way for them to fear you. Use a tool like a spray bottle. Air cans which are available in pet supplies shop can be too loud for them because they have very sensitive hearing.
Older cats are easier to train
Unlike dogs, it's easier to train cats that have matured a few months. Kittens have very short attention spans and love to leap and run around. Kittens are able to relate certain sounds with cat food, only if you condition them. Cats that are a few months old are calmer, thus more capable of processing the commands of their owners.
There are specific needs you need to meet
Your cat has certain needs that cannot be eliminated by training. Cats always need to play. They need something to wrestle with, whether it's a ball of yarn or big insects. Also, they need to sharpen their claws so provide a block of wood or a scratch pad; otherwise they would use your tires, rug and sofa as scratch pads. Cats like to seek quiet places so they may leave when there are loud noises (TV, baking mixer, vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, etc).
You need to create harmless deterrents
There are many instances where you or any family member will not be able to attend to your cat. In situations like this, install harmless deterrents around your home. Line a cardboard with double sided tape and position it in places where you don't want your cat to stay. Put an empty bottle or chimes over the toilet paper roller in the comfort room so the cat would be startled. Cats hate the scent of peppermint (they usually squint their eyes when they smell it) so spray parts of your house where you don't want your cat to go.
